Kansas City Chiefs: Rivalry with Broncos still alive and well
By John McCarty
There are plenty of other reasons to dislike the Denver Broncos.
Perhaps it’s Von Miller, who wears number 58 due to Derrick Thomas, coming off the edge against the Chiefs. Or maybe it’s Denver with their just perhaps a little late shot on Chiefs players throughout the years (you know what I’m talking about).
Perhaps it’s the Chiefs completely melting down at home on a wild Thursday night game that culminated with a Jamaal Charles fumble returned for a touchdown sealing the victory for the bad guys. What about the Derrick Thomas Monday night meltdown against Shannon Sharpe against… you guessed it… the Denver Broncos? That one stung too.

Or, and perhaps this is just me, why do Broncos fans chant “IN-COM-PLETE”? Seriously, the games are both on televsion and radio, and we know what’s happened. It’s annoying. Stop. Just stop.
Maybe things are finally starting to catch up to the Broncos though. Chiefs fans were caught with a sense of dread in 2016 when the Broncos traded up to draft quarterback Paxton Lynch, a quarterback the Chiefs were rumored to really like and might have taken had Denver not leapfrogged them.
The Chiefs would subsequently traded out of that first round and would eventually land Chris Jones. Chiefs 1, Broncos 0.
In 2017, the Chiefs would make the move up to land Patrick Mahomes from Texas Tech. A strong armed quarterback with the ability to make moves on the run with good accuracy. Perhaps the Chiefs have found their John Elway, someone able to make unfathomable throws and jaw dropping plays.
Kansas City would not have gone after Mahomes had the Broncos not jumped in front of them and “stole” Paxton Lynch. While it’s possible that Lynch might not have had quite as bad of a career with Andy Reid and the Chiefs, it’s still a huge sigh of relief that Denver took a bullet for the Chiefs there.
Now Kansas City has what looks to be their franchise quarterback in Patrick Mahomes and the Denver Broncos overpaid for journeyman Case Keenum. This is the same team that thought Trevor Sieman was the answer at quarterback though, so are we really that surprised?
