Nebraska football is celebrating Homecoming this weekend, but every fan is anxious about the Purdue Boilermakers coming to town. This is an absolute must-win game for an 0-3 Huskers team.

While it’s still WAY too early to give up on Scott Frost and the Nebraska Cornhuskers turning things around over the next few years, the 2018 season is basically a wash at this point. The Huskers are 0-3 and realistically will probably only win three or four games this season. That’s assuming we continue to see the current product week to week.

With narrow losses to Colorado and Troy and then a blowout defeat in Ann Arbor, the Huskers find themselves at 0-3. If they don’t beat a surging Purdue team this weekend, they’ll be 0-4 for the first time in program history.

While I wouldn’t say that’s rock bottom for the program (especially with Wisconsin the week after, which is surely an 0-5 record if Nebraska loses this weekend), this is not what fans had in mind when Frost was hired. I’m definitely not giving up hope on what the guy can bring, but the Huskers have to beat Purdue this weekend. Nebraska can’t be 0-4 in Frost’s first year.

Purdue is 1-3 on the year, notching their first win of the season last week. The difference between these two programs, however, is that Purdue has been in all four of their games. They narrowly lost to Northwestern, Eastern Michigan, and Missouri yet somehow knocked off the 23rd ranked Boston College program last week.

In other words, the Boilermakers are better than their record indicates. Are the Nebraska Cornhuskers better than 0-3? They sure haven’t looked like it these past few weeks.

After rolling in the first half of their season opener, we’ve seen mostly sloppy football by this team. Turnovers, ugly penalties, and last week there was nothing offensively to get excited about, as the Huskers scored just ten points. They were trailing 39-0 at half time too, so it’s not like the defense was kicking butt and taking names.

Week four of the regular season might seem too early to say “This is a must win game”, but for Nebraska, it’s definitely not. The Cornhuskers are trying to avoid something they’ve never done before and that’s fall to 0-4. It can’t happen and Purdue, despite their recent resurgence, is a winnable game.

If the Huskers fall to the Boilermakers, they’ll be 0-4 and then will face a ranked Wisconsin team the week after. There’s no way Nebraska wins that one, as A) Wisconsin is a better team and B) Wisconsin has had Nebraska’s number since the Huskers came to the Big Ten.

Gotta get a W this weekend. Hopefully Frost fires these guys up and gets a victory over Homecoming weekend in Lincoln!

Go Big Red!
