Patrick Mahomes has taken the NFL by storm in the first two weeks of the season. Unfortunately, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback will hit a regression here soon.

This post is going to make me incredibly unpopular, but for those of you who read my posts frequently, you know I’m a realist, especially when it comes to the Kansas City Chiefs. I’m not going to say things just because it’s a popular opinion. That leads me to a post that I really don’t want to write.

So far through two games, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been on fire! That’s actually an understatement. The kid has been sensational, tossing for 582 yards and ten touchdowns with no interceptions in his first glimpse of action in the 2018 season.

There’s no debating that Mahomes has been electric. No one else has thrown for more touchdowns than him this season and the throws he’s making are insane. He looks to be the real deal.

With that said, however, a regression is going to happen at some point. I know Chiefs fans don’t want to hear that, but it’s the truth. All athletes regress sooner or later and it’ll happen to Mahomes too.

There will be a string of games throughout the course of the season where Mahomes struggles and will throw multiple interceptions. Teams will have more and more film on Mahomes, meaning they’ll be able to figure him out and make things a little more difficult for him. That’s going to lead to picks and probably less touchdowns.

Look, I hate having to write about this. I’ve loved watching Patrick Mahomes play this season and think he’s going to be a real star in the league. I wouldn’t be doing my job if I just sat back and pretended like Mahomes was going to throw for 60+ touchdowns and no interceptions all year though, and that’s why I have to be the Debbie Downer here.

A regression will happen for Mahomes and it’ll be how he responds to that regression and the adjustments he and Andy Reid make that will show us what type of quarterback he’ll be for the duration of his NFL career.

We’ve seen regressions occur already with some of the young signal callers in the league. Deshaun Watson is one of the more notable ones, as he threw for 19 touchdowns in eight games last year, but has looked like a shell of himself so far in 2018. Watson is coming off an ACL injury though, for what it’s worth.

Derek Carr is another one worth noting. In 2016, Carr was in the running for MVP until the Chiefs made him look foolish late in the year. Carr was amazing that season, but hasn’t looked the same since then.

Quarterbacks regress all the time, but it’s how they respond to it that is important. Do they learn from their mistakes or do they keep making the same errors over and over again?

Hey, if Mahomes decides not to have a regression, I’d LOVE to be wrong on this one. He does appear to be human, so just know that if a few poor performances happen, it doesn’t mean Mahomes isn’t good. It just means he’s experiencing what a lot of other NFL quarterbacks go through and that’s definitely a good thing.
