It’s been a long time since Kansas football has been 2-1 on the year, but that’s exactly the case right now. Running back Pooka Williams is to thank for the Jayhawks’ last two wins.

Say what you want about the Kansas football program, but there’s one name right now that deserves nearly all the glory for the Jayhawks. That player’s name is Pooka Williams, who has been sensational in the last two games.

Williams, who did not play in the season opener, has already tallied 283 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. He’s been a lot of fun to watch.

Had Williams played in that week one game against Nicholls State, it’s very possible that the Kansas Jayhawks are 3-0 right now rather than 2-1. That would have been something and likely would have ensured that David Beaty kept his job for at least another season.

In his first game, which came against Central Michigan last week, Williams rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns off of 14 carries. He followed that up with a 158 yard rushing performance against Rutgers this past weekend. Williams found the end zone in that game too.

Kansas football has had a lot of problems over the last decade, but Pooka Williams finally gives them a legitimate playmaker. Does this mean the Jayhawks are going to be good? No, not at all, but at least it means they’ll be able to put up points.

Over the years, we’ve seen KU play some close games, but fall just short. Having Pooka Williams on the roster means the Jayhawks might be able to come out on top in some of those tight games. Even if it just means winning an extra game or two, that’d be HUGE for this program moving forward.

Next up for the Jayhawks are the Baylor Bears, who are also 2-1. The Bears could end up being a winnable conference game for KU and might be their best chance to get a W in the Big 12 this year. Oklahoma State and West Virginia are the two games on the schedule after Baylor and both of those teams are currently ranked in the top 25.

Back to Williams though, whether or not the Kansas Jayhawks win another game this season, it’s fun to finally watch a fun player in Lawrence. Offense has been hard to come by for the Jayhawks, but Williams has carried them so far and KU fans already love what they’re seeing from this kid.
