Kansas football will once again be in the market for a new head football coach at the end of this 2018 season. Who will be that new man on the sideline? Let’s take a look at some options.

After losing their home opener to Nicholls State, Kansas football is more than likely going to be hiring a new head coach within the next few months, maybe even sooner. Much like the previous hires, targeting a ‘name’ in this situation is likely a bad idea.

Kansas needs to focus on how to win some games and restore some semblance of pride to both their fan base but also the program. With that in mind, four names that could make sense to be the ‘next man up’ in Lawrence.

POTENTIAL HEAD COACH REPLACEMENTS

Chris Klieman (North Dakota State)

Perhaps no program at the lower FCS level of college football has won more in  the unlikeliest of places than North Dakota State. After former head coach Craig Bohl left to take over the Wyoming football program, Klieman took over and the train has continued to run full speed ahead as the Bison.

Klieman has spent the vast majority of his career coaching in the midwest, including a one-year stint as the defensive backs coach at Kansas in 1997 and one year at Missouri State. He also spent time at Northern Iowa, Western Illinois and North Dakota State.

Since taking over in 2014 as the head coach, NDSU has won three National Championships. They also continue to produce NFL draft picks headlined by Carson Wentz, second overall in the 2016 draft.

The question is would Klieman be interested in the Kansas job? It can’t be viewed highly in coaching circles due to the extremely poor on field performance. Klieman has a good thing going and he simply may not be interested in the Jayhawk job.

Based on his experience with recruiting and coaching in the Midwest, the Jayhawks should include Klieman on their short list to be the next coach.
