Meg Kraft, fiance of #12 Gehrig Dieter, a receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs

You and I have been working on this for some time. First off, tell everyone a little about yourself, please.

Hi! I’m Meg! I’m a 25-year-old Cleveland, Ohio native and Kansas City transplant. Chiefs wide receiver Gehrig Dieter is my fiance and better half. We’re both former Bowling Green State University Falcons and I received my degree in Multiplatform Journalism. I’m a social media specialist for a financial advising firm and a freelance journalist for a local women’s magazine, wedding blogger, self-proclaimed Top Chef, and most importantly-dog mom.

How did you and Gehrig meet?

This is slightly embarrassing but really speaks to the day and age that we live in. He totally slid in my DM’s (messaged me on Twitter). G asked if I already went to BGSU (hint: he was originally on the prowl for a freshman, but stumbled upon a junior who did NOT date football players). I remember showing his profile pic to my parents, dad was not thrilled with the haircut. Mom told me to keep an open mind.

We talked back and forth and found out we lived in the same apartment complex, but this was in early June, so I was skeptical about the possibility of us actually hanging out when I returned to school in August.

We texted every day for three months leading up to meeting each other in real life, which is a true testament to our connection because I’m not big on texting (and at the time, athletes). When the Falcon’s football camp wrapped up it was time to meet. We had plans to meet at his apartment. I changed my outfit too many times to count and almost backed out twice because of nerves. I finally walked over to his building and knocked on the door.

Weirdest moment of my life: he opened the door and everything went in slow motion. I looked him in the eyes and truly (swear on my life) thought to myself “I’m going to marry this dude.” I didn’t believe in love at first sight or whatever before that, but I do now.

Talk about a love story.

The two of you are now engaged, so how did he propose?

We had just celebrated our fourth anniversary and moved back to Tuscaloosa after living/training in Orlando for a few months. We had about two weeks before the NFL Draft and had discussed taking a mini vacation somewhere to relax. I was thinking beachside brunch and horseback riding in the Gulf Shores, but G told me he had made the executive decision to book a white-water rafting trip to Chattanooga, TN.

You can imagine my reaction. I’m not a fan of water sports but he told me this was at the top of his bucket list and knowing what a big month we had ahead of us, I said: “uh….. okay.”

He showed me this shabby 1.5-star motel that we were going to be staying at. I tried my best to put a smile on my face for this little adventure, so we packed up the bulldogs and headed to Chattanooga.

We drove up this mountain and I kept asking if we were lost. How could a motel be so far away from everything? We got to the very top and came upon this incredible log cabin, G stopped the car and said “Surprise!” Even then, a proposal had never crossed my mind. The cabin was called “The Cabin in the Clouds”  as it looks over this breathtaking valley. Our rafting trip wasn’t until the next day, so G told me to go get ready to go out to dinner.

I was mid-shower, maybe five minutes in, when he pounded on the door telling me to hurry up. He said he wanted to take a picture before the sunset (which was so weird, he HATES taking pictures).

I hurriedly got ready and told him I was ready to take the picture, but he told me to stay inside and proceeded to close all the blinds. It was at that moment, of him acting totally odd, that I knew what was about to happen in this romantic, remote cabin in the middle of nowhere: he was going to kill me.

The confusion continued when he finally told me to go stand on the deck so he could “prop up the camera”. I let the dogs out and I saw “Goose” run over to the stairs, with his little nub tail wagging. My heart dropped, someone else must be up here. I walked over to the edge and saw Gehrig’s mom! My brain started short-circuiting. She was standing there with a camera and then I saw MY MOM crying behind her. Then my dad, then G’s dad! I couldn’t even speak.

I turned around to go tell Gehrig that somehow all four of our parents were here on the mountain, but he was already behind me, down on one knee. “Will you marry me?” I think I blacked out., but eventually leaped into his arms and said yes. I really was on cloud 9, on the deck of the Cabin in the Clouds. It was the best moment of my entire life.

No matter how many of us proposed, more than likely this makes our attempt look elementary, to say the least. Like a scene out of a Hallmark Christmas movie.
