Nebraska football finally decided on a starting quarterback and the lucky winner is Adrian Martinez. The announcement came on Sunday morning.

It’s been the storyline all offseason (well, aside from the Scott Frost hype): Who will be the starting quarterback for Nebraska football this year? We finally have our answers Husker fans! Adrian Martinez will be the man under center to start the year.

It had been a close competition all spring and summer with Martinez and Tristan Gebbia being the two who had the best shot at winning the job. Ultimately Frost and the Cornhuskers went with Martinez.

Martinez, only 18 years old, will be the first true freshman in Nebraska history to start at quarterback for the program, according to Parker Gabriel of the Lincoln Journal Star. No pressure, kid!

Martinez is from Fresno, California and didn’t play his senior season at Clovis West High School due to a shoulder injury. Nebraska still loved what they saw from him as a junior though. So much, in fact, that Frost headed out to Fresno shortly after taking the Nebraska job to offer Martinez a scholarship.

This 2018 season is one where Huskers fans are essentially giving Frost a free pass. It’s okay for the program not to be as competitive this season because we all know that Nebraska football is going to get back to relevancy under Frost within the next three years.

Having a true freshman start at quarterback means there will be some growing pains, but just think of it this way. Imagine how good Adrian Martinez will be as a junior and senior (assuming he doesn’t head to the pros).

Akron is Nebraska’s first opponent of the season and it’s a game the Huskers should be able to win. With that said, however, it’s still no guarantee.

It’ll be Martinez’s first REAL game since his junior year of high school and any time a program has a new head coach, there will be kinks to work out. Hopefully Martinez shows up big time in his Nebraska debut.

Even though Martinez won the job, Parker Gabriel of the Lincoln Journal Star still said that Tristan Gebbia could see playing time.

"Gebbia still figures to factor heavily in the Huskers’ plans this year, as Frost has said that both will need to be ready to play."

So, Nebraska football has their starting quarterback for week one. How will Adrian Martinez perform in his first game as the Cornhuskers signal caller? I for one can’t wait to find out.

Go Big Red!
