The Kansas City Chiefs made a move Sunday morning, inking cornerback Orlando Scandrick. This is a move that could help the secondary improve.

After the Washington Redskins parted ways with Orlando Scandrick last week, the Kansas City Chiefs brought him in for a workout and are now signing him. Scandrick, a fifth round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, had spent every regular season of his career with the Dallas Cowboys before signing with the Redskins this offseason.

Scandrick did not play in the Redskins’ first preseason game and was let go shortly after. That’s when, of course, fans speculated if the Chiefs should bring the cornerback on or not.

The news broke on early Sunday morning that the Chiefs did indeed bring Scandrick on. Field Yates was one of the many to report it.

Honestly, this wasn’t a move the Chiefs NEEDED to make, but I guess it can’t hurt. The secondary isn’t going to be very good this year and we’ve seen brief flashes of that during the two preseason games so far.

David Amerson, while decent at forcing turnovers, isn’t good in coverage and had that “cornerback who’s going to irritate Chiefs fans the most” vibe going for him this year. Amerson was getting cooked by the opposition in preseason, but will Orlando Scandrick be much better in coverage? Obviously the Kansas City Chiefs think so.

Kendall Fuller has shown potential during the preseason, but the other side is cause for concern. Perhaps Scandrick can be a step up from Amerson, but we’ll have to wait and see.

The former Cowboy has started 69 games totaling 353 tackles, 64 defended passes, and eight interceptions during that time. He’s 31 years old, so the Chiefs aren’t getting younger at the position.

Travis Steffen previously wrote that Orlando Scandrick made sense for the Chiefs, noting,

"Adding competition to push Amerson and the other cornerbacks while also allowing the Chiefs some veteran presence in case one of the starting three go down with an injury. It also allows the rookie cornerbacks not to be thrown in right away before they are ready like we are seeing safety Armani Watts possibly having to do this season."

Perhaps the addition of Scandrick will drive Amerson to play better or maybe Scandrick will play decently like he did prior to 2017. Last season, however, he looked pretty washed up and that’s why it’s hard to be super excited about this signing.

Will Orlando Scandrick come in and shore up the secondary? Guess we’ll have to wait and find out.
