In an unexpected move, the Kansas City Chiefs granted safety Robert Golden his release. The Chiefs can easily move on without him.
The Kansas City Chiefs have had a dilemma on their hands. They needed secondary help months ago and as of now, they need more help than before.
In a surprising move, the Kansas City Chiefs granted Robert Golden‘s request to be released, in hopes that he can find a better fit somewhere else.
The Chiefs Kingdom went nuts over the news of Golden’s departure, knowing their current situation with the secondary was in dire need of help, this was another baseball bat to the knees for an already dilapidated secondary. Or was it.

What are the Chiefs losing in Golden? Not much. He’s what we call a special teams lifer. In other words, he is not a safety.
Over the course of his six-year career he has totaled 80 tackles, two fumble recoveries, two interceptions, and 7 pass deflections.
Again, he isn’t a safety. To put things in perspective, Daniel Sorenson has four years under his belt. He has 133 tackles, three forced fumbles, 3.5 sacks, 14 pass deflections and four interceptions.
The Chiefs don’t need a player at the safety position that doesn’t play it well. Although his special teams contributions are well noted, the Chiefs have a large number of suitors for special teams.
Does this mean Kansas City is safe? Not at all. It simply means that they need to replace a role player with a slightly better role player.
Quentin Demps, Mike Mitchell, and Tayvon Branch are all sitting at home. Yes they are all on the dark side of 30 years old, but they can provide more contributions than what Golden was going to give.
There is little doubt that Kansas City will bring in help for the secondary at some point, and quite frankly, Sorenson is a much bigger loss than Golden was.
The season isn’t over yet, it hasn’t even begun. Let the NFL preseason run its course. The moves will be made to bolster up the secondary depth for the Chiefs.
