Nebraska Football has yet to make noise in Big Ten West

When Nebraska football and the rest of the university made the move to the Big Ten, it’s safe to say that fans thought the Cornhuskers would own the conference. That hasn’t been the case.

Before relocating to the Big Ten in 2011, the Nebraska Cornhuskers were one of the more dominant teams in the Big 12 for many years (and before that, they owned the Big 8). Sure they had their down years, but what teams don’t? For the most part, the Huskers were nearly always at the top of the Big 12.

After relocating, however, the football program hasn’t had the type of success many expected to see out of the Cornhuskers. They’ve won their division just once since the move to the Big Ten and that was back in 2012 when the divisions were still referred to as “Legends” and “Leaders” rather than East vs West.

After winning the Legends conference in 2012, Huskers fans thought this was only the beginning of what was to come, but sadly, there hasn’t been much to brag about since them. The football program is coming off one of their worst seasons ever and are now looking to rebuild and hopefully become more competitive in the Big Ten.

Being in the Big Ten hasn’t been bad for the university as a whole, as the volleyball team has owned the conference (and well… the rest of the country pretty much) since the move. Their two National Championships in the last three years have proven that Nebraska is a powerhouse in college volleyball and they’ve had to face the likes of Penn State, Wisconsin, and Minnesota during that stretch.

The baseball team has also captured a conference title during the last six years, proving that they can compete with their Big Ten foes. The move obviously wasn’t just made with the football team in mind, but everyone knows that’s the main money maker in Lincoln, and at most schools for that matter.

Nebraska football has yet to have that dominant run in the Big Ten since the 2012 season and hopefully that changes under Scott Frost. Nebraska moved out of the Big 12 and to the Big Ten for many reasons (money being one of the big ones), but at times it seems like they’ve been irrelevant during football season.

Teams like Ohio State, Wisconsin, and even Iowa have beat up on the Cornhuskers over the last few years and it’s been frustrating to watch. This wasn’t how Nebraska’s time in the Big Ten was supposed to go at all, but hopefully things are about to change.

By year three of Scott Frost’s tenure, Nebraska football should be playing in the Big Ten Championship Game and doing what we all thought the Cornhuskers would do when they first made the move. The Big Ten is a great conference, especially for football, and it’d be great to see the Huskers make some noise in it moving forward.
