Last year was the first official Players Weekend for Major League Baseball and it’s happening again in year two. Here are the best nicknames that the Kansas City Royals came up with.

It’s cool to see Major League Baseball be hip every once in awhile and letting the players pick their own nickname to don on the back of their jersey for a game is as hip as it can get. A lot of baseball players had fun with this last year, including the Kansas City Royals, who had some fun names a season ago.

One year later and the nicknames are still pretty creative. It doesn’t look like many of the players used the same nickname as last year (though some did and that’s understandable) and some who didn’t partake last year decided to not be Debbie Downers and join the fun in 2018.

After looking through the Royals’ nicknames, here are the ones I found to be the best.

More from KC Kingdom

  • Blaine Boyer – “Blazer” – This looks cool on the back of any jersey.
  • Danny Duffy – “Chill Sergeant” – Good ol’ Duffman… Would have loved him forever if he had “OH YEAH!” on the back of his jersey.
  • Alcides Escobar – “Magic” – We all miss that Esky Magic.
  • Jason Hammel – “Hammer” – Repeat from last year, but I liked it then and I like it now.
  • Jakob Junis – “June Bug” – Obviously it’s a play on words with his last name and an actual type of insect (gross), but still clever.
  • Ian Kennedy – “Budda” – Good to see Kennedy get in on the fun this year after using his regular last name in 2017.
  • Brandon Maurer – “Maurer Power” – Yes, he used his last name for part of it, but he also threw in the word power, which rhymes, so that automatically makes it clever.
  • Kevin McCarthy – “Mac” – Simple, but solid.
  • Ryan O’Hearn – “BroHearn” – Not sure why this made me laugh so hard.
  • Brett Phillips – “Maverick” – Like Boyer’s nickname, this would look cool on any jersey.
  • Glenn Sparkman “Sparky” – Again… Simple, but it checks out.

Some people might think the Players Weekend is tacky, but I enjoy it. I like that it gives MLB players a chance to be themselves and have a personality. It seems like over the years, baseball players are becoming less and less marketed in the public and we seldom get to hear much about what these guys are like outside of baseball.

I’ve always been in favor of the nicknames on jersey aspect of sports. That was arguably the coolest part of the XFL after all (everyone loved “He Hate Me”).

The Kansas City Royals appeared to have gotten into Players Weekend this year and some picked some clever nicknames to have displayed on the back of their jerseys. This will take place August 24-26 when the Royals take on the Cleveland Indians.

Last time the Royals wore these Player’s Weekend uniforms, they not only got swept, but I’m pretty sure they were shut out the entire series. Maybe they’ll be better luck this year.
