Kansas City Chiefs could sneakily make a Super Bowl run
By Chris Taylor
The Kansas City Chiefs have been hyped up this offseason. At the same time, many don’t believe they will contend. How far could this team really go?
It’s an exciting time to be a Kansas City Chiefs fan. Patrick Mahomes, Sammy Watkins, Tyreek Hill, Kendall Fuller, Eric Berry, Travis Kelce, Kareem Hunt, and Justin Houston are plenty reason to get excited. The biggest reason for the excitement, however, is the unknown.
Not one single person knows what this team is going to look like. There is really no telling how good this Kansas City Chiefs team is going to be, perhaps for the first time in decades.
Mahomes and Andy Reid may have an advantage in 2018. Teams will have to adjust to Mahomes’ play style and the schemes will be fresh and new. The domination of the AFC West may continue because of this.
It usually takes a season for teams to accommodate a player like Mahomes with the proper personnel to stop him. At this moment, no AFC West team has a defense built to stop the Mahomes air attack that is on its way.

In order to stop Kansas City, a team would have to have two lockdown corners, a safety named Berry, and a front seven that can press and cover.
No team has that, not even the Chiefs.
The Chargers just lost Jason Verrett, who at the least is one of the best corners in the division. They do have Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram, but neither of those will be covering Hill or Watkins.
The Raiders have Gareon Conley and Rashaan Melvin at the corner spots, and Khalil Mack can only do so much.
The Broncos defense isn’t what it used to be. Von Miller is still there, and he already feels like Mahomes is one of the hardest quarterbacks to defend.
Kansas City beat these teams over and over the last couple of seasons. Granted, Alex Smith was the Chiefs quarterback then, but Mahomes brings something more. At the least, he brings the unknown.
The Chiefs offense is better than it was the last two seasons. The defense should be younger, quicker, and better than the last couple seasons as well.
If Kansas City can win the AFC West for an impressive third year in a row, the Chiefs will be right back in the playoffs, regardless of their overall record. What happens once they get there is a best-seller yet to be written.
For whatever reason, the Chiefs have been beyond dismal in the playoffs. During the nineties, the Chiefs made frequent trips to the playoffs. Although they got close with Joe Montana, there was that one kicker not to be named, that missed those chip shot field goals.
The playoff woes are not just an Andy Reid issue or an Alex Smith issue, it’s a Kansas City Chiefs issue. The Chiefs have been consistently one of the best teams in the league for the last five years.
There was the 28 point lead that vanished against the Colts in a manner which led some to believe it was a curse. Up 38-10 in the third quarter, the Chiefs found a way to lose. They lost despite leading the game in time of possession and despite winning the turnover battle 1-4. There is no way the Chiefs should have lost that game.
The loss against the Titans last season in the playoffs was another epic fail. Up 21-0 at one point and 21-3 at halftime, the Chiefs forgot how to play football. They lost Alex Smith’s last game in Alex Smith fashion. He can take you to the party, but he can’t dance.
This season the Chiefs will have a quarterback that doesn’t know how to take his foot off the gas. If the Chiefs build a lead, they will not allow a team to overtake them. Not with a quarterback that has the talent and drive of a Patrick Mahomes.
The defense only has to be better than 28th in the league. The offense can do the rest. The Chiefs are dangerous. Kareem Hunt returns as the leagues reigning rushing champ. Spencer Ware returns as perhaps the best No. 2 back in the game. Hill and Watkins could be the best wide receiver duo in the country, and Travis Kelce is the best tight end in football.
The Patriots have trouble with the Chiefs, so Kansas City has the confidence other teams might not have. The Jaguars are probably still a few pieces away from taking that next jump forward. The Chiefs have had plenty of trouble out of the Steelers, however.
Still, if the stars were to align correctly, the Chiefs could sneak into the Super Bowl on the coat tails of their quarterback, who doesn’t know he isn’t supposed to lead the Chiefs anywhere quite yet.
It may sound like a stretch, but there have been people who think Mahomes could be in the MVP race, which means his numbers would be good, which also means the Chiefs would likely be great.
