K-State Football has tough decision to make regarding starting quarterback
K-State football had three different quarterbacks taking snaps last season, but it’ll be down to two this year. Who will win the starting quarterback job in 2018?
When the Kansas State Wildcats‘ 2017 season began, Jesse Ertz was the unquestioned starter. Ertz missed all of 2015 due to injury, but threw for 1,755 yards and ran for 1,012 as a junior in 2016. His injury in 2017 opened the door for the next chapter of KSU quarterbacks though and Bill Snyder will have a tough decision to make there with who gets to start this upcoming season.
For those that don’t remember, K-State had two quarterbacks that filled in for Ertz. At first it was Alex Delton, who played in seven games in 2017. Delton, like most K-State quarterbacks, was more effective on the ground than through the air.
Yes, Delton’s passing yards were higher than his rushing yards, but barely. He totaled 634 yards on the ground to go along with nine touchdowns while throwing for 648 yards and three touchdowns.

Delton looked to have lost his starting job until the Cactus Bowl against UCLA when he relieved Skylar Thompson and led the Cats to a blowout victory. In that game, he rushed for three touchdowns and added another one through the air.
Speaking of Skylar Thompson, he appeared in eight games and threw for 689 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions. He rushed for 267 yards and three scores. Thompson’s best game came in a win against Oklahoma State where he threw for 203 yards and three touchdowns.
The two are both more than capable of being the every week starter for the Wildcats, but my guess would be that Delton wins the job. For one, he’s older, and no that shouldn’t matter, but when the race is this close between the two, that’s definitely an advantage for him.
Without Delton, Kansas State doesn’t win the Cactus Bowl against UCLA. Thompson was struggling mightily in that game, but Delton entered and the Wildcats offense looked like a whole new unit. He carried them with his legs, but also made the necessary throws to keep his team ahead.
Kansas State is lucky to have two capable quarterbacks, but obviously only one can take the majority of the snaps. At this point, it’s neck and neck as to who will win the job, but Snyder will make the decision he thinks will help the Cats succeed. That should give fans confidence right there.
