Landry Shamet of the Wichita State Shockers heard his name called in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft. He was taken 26th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers.

There wasn’t a more exciting team in the National Basketball Association last season than the Philadelphia 76ers and now a member of the Wichita State Shockers will be joining that fiery squad. Landry Shamet was the first (and only) member of the Shockers to hear his name called in the first round of the draft.

Shamet wrapped up his collegiate career averaging 14.9 points and 5.2 assists per game. He spent three years in Wichita with the Shockers program and it was a bit surprising to see Shamet off the board so early.

With that said, however, Landry Shamet has the opportunity to play right away in Philly. The 76ers will have a decision to make when it comes to bringing back J.J. Redick or not, which could give Shamet more playing time. He won’t be a starter, but could very well get to that point down the road.

The 76ers are one of the more fun teams to follow right now and will be one of the more hyped up teams this offseason, as they’ve been “trusting the process” for a few years now. With names like Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, and Markelle Fultz, the Sixers have some of the flashiest players in the league.

Landry Shamet has a chance to be a part of that and make a name for himself early on in his career with one of the best teams in the league. It’s always cool to see players from your school get drafted, but it’s even cooler when they land with a contender. Shamet was drafted by one of the hottest teams in the league with a great chance to compete for the title next season.

Shamet was the first member of the Wichita State Shockers to go in the first round since Xavier McDaniel in 1985 (back when the Seattle Supersonics were still a thing). Shaq Morris and Connor Frankamp did not hear their names called in the draft, but both could sign with a team at some point.

Shamet’s ability to play both point guard and shooting guard is likely what attracted the 76ers to him. If somehow the 76ers lock up LeBron James this offseason, they’ll for sure be the team to watch and Landry Shamet might become a bigger name in the NBA than we’d have imagined.
