Kansas City Chiefs: Ranking every Chiefs starting quarterback since 2000
When this post was originally published in 2017, the number one and two spots were no brainers.
With Len Dawson not included in these rankings, Trent Green and Alex Smith had a chance to grab the top spot. It was a tough choice, as arguments could be made for both guys. Smith kept the Chiefs relevant in each of his five years as the quarterback in Kansas City, but early on in his Chiefs career, it was more thanks to the defense than it was the offense.

During Green’s tenure, the Chiefs were deadly on offense, especially in that 2003 season. As mentioned on Green’s slide, had the team had anything that somewhat resembled an NFL defense in 2003, that season could have ended with a Super Bowl appearance and maybe even a Lombardi Trophy.
Some might be clamoring for Patrick Mahomes to be number one, but I still couldn’t put him that high yet. Yes, Mahomes has an MVP under his belt and led his team to the AFC Championship Game, Green and Smith put together multiple successful seasons. Mahomes surely will do that, but we have to see it first.
This list was hard to put together because some of these guys started very few games for the KC Chiefs. Chase Daniel started two games, Warren Moon, Nick Foles, and Patrick Mahomes started one while other players like Elvis Grbac and Tyler Thigpen were the starter in just one season post-2000.
It’s crazy to go over these names and have someone like Damon Huard right outside the top five. Huard wasn’t good aside from that 2006 season, but he kept the team’s playoff hopes alive that year and that was worthy of a top six spot. Plus… One pick in eight starts is pretty impressive.
Matt Cassel might not be a fan favorite in Kansas City, but that 2010 season was pretty epic for a Chiefs quarterback. His Chiefs ending wasn’t pretty, but Cassel did what a lot of other Chiefs quarterbacks couldn’t do and that was win the division.
I think these rankings were fair considering some I only had a game or a few games to go off of. What do you think Chiefs Kingdom and what would your rankings look like?
