The Kansas Jayhawks football program has had very little to celebrate for almost a decade. The good news is, it can only get better from here.

The Kansas Jayhawks football program is as opposite from the basketball program as possible. In the recent rankings released by the USA Today, the Kansas Jayhawks find themselves ranked 121st out of a possible 130 schools. The only one way to go is up from there.

For fans of the Kansas Jayhawks football team, being ranked 121st may appear grim. Imagine how it feels to be the nine teams behind them on that list. Things have a chance to get better this season for David Beaty‘s Jayhawks.

Two the Jayhawks first three games are against teams sharing the bottom of the barrel with Kansas. They open the season in Lawrence against Nicholls State, an FCS team. The next week they travel to Central Michigan to play the 107th ranked Chippewas’. The third game of the year is back home where they will face Rutgers, who lands at 93rd.

There is a true possibility that the Kansas Jayhawks could start the season 3-0. The problem with is, once Big 12 play starts they will only face two teams outside of the top 50. Texas Tech at 51st and Baylor at 82nd.

More from KC Kingdom

The Jayhawks have been dreadful in conference play for years. They’ve only won five conference games since 2008, and haven’t won more than a single conference game in each season.

This could be the year things start to change. Kansas fans will take a competitive team before they ask for a winning team right now. They just have to compete. If Kansas can continually be in these football games, fans will return to the stadium and the joke can be on one of those nine teams behind them.

The Jayhawks rank second nationally in returning production according to sbnation, which is a pretty decent category to rank highly in. Especially compared with some of the other categories Kansas leads.

The Jayhawks canceled their spring game, so that doesn’t bode well. There is still time for head coach David Beaty to get his team ready to play. The defense should be fairly decent at the worst this season with a couple possible All-conference guys on that side of the ball.

Steven Sims Jr. will be the player to watch this season for Jayhawks fans. He has the potential to break out nationally at the receiver position.
