There is still plenty of time for Bill Snyder and Kansas State to figure things out, but a two-quarterback system is something they need to stay away from.

Bill Snyder doesn’t need a snot-nosed sports writer to tell him how to do his job. Nobody on this great Earth is qualified to do that. A two-quarterback system isn’t an ideal situation for multiple reasons. If Kansas State is to contend this season, they will need to figure out who’s going to lead this team down the field.

The good thing is that Kansas State has two formidable quarterbacks in contention. Skylar Thompson did well in taking over last season for Jesse Ertz, who only played five games last season as a senior. Ertz was a better runner than Thompson, but Thompson led the Wildcats to an 8-5 record down the stretch, taking the majority of snaps. Some of those snaps were shared with Alex Delton however.

When Skylar went down early in the bowl game against UCLA, Delton took over and played wonderfully. Although he only threw for 52 yards, he did have a touchdown pass. Where Delton excelled was on the ground. Delton ran for 158 yards and three touchdowns on 20 attempts on the way to a 35-17 thumping of the Bruins.

There are plenty of reasons to stay away from using two different quarterbacks. For one, it tells everyone, fans included, that the team doesn’t have a clear-cut leader at the quarterback position. For two, the confidence of the two quarterbacks can never be where it needs to be. Every missed throw or turnover will have these kids looking over their shoulder. Their attention won’t be where it needs to be.

Some will say it will be hard for defenses to plan for a team if they don’t know who the quarterback is, and that is true to a degree. The negative aspects of a two-quarterback system are much bigger than the positives.

It appears to be a dead heat when it comes to the quarterback situation, which is good. Competition should bring the best out of both. It is necessary that Bill Snyder makes a decision and sticks with it.

The Wildcats finished 8-5 in 2017, winning five out of the last six after starting the season 3-4. Four of their five losses came by seven points or less, meaning the Wildcats weren’t far from being a top team in the nation.

The same should be said of the Wildcats this season. Even with Byron Pringle and D.J. Reed leaving for the NFL, and their two leading tacklers graduated, they bring back a veteran offensive line and plenty of skill players. Their defense should still be one of the best in the conference.

Either quarterback should please the Wildcat faithful in 2018, let’s just hope one of the two take that next step and makes this team his own. Time will tell how long coach Snyder has left on the Wildcats sideline, it would be nice to give him another outstanding season.
