The Kansas City Chiefs went defense heavy in the 2018 draft. Their first selection was defensive lineman Breeland Speaks out of Ole Miss.

The Kansas City Chiefs first pick of the 2018 NFL draft is Breeland Speaks, and if you don’t know him by now, hold on to your hats. The defensive lineman out of Ole Miss is a ball of energy out on the field, never taking a play off, never having to pick himself up off of the ground.

In order to get a better feel for what type of person and player Speaks was, I reached out to our friends at Ole Hotty Toddy to get their take on the newest player for the Kansas City Chiefs. Who would know better than those who cover the Rebels on a daily basis?

Before I was able to even get a question in, they were flooding my phone with praises. The more alerts I was getting, the more excited I was getting. The icing on the cake was head coach Andy Reid’s press conference afterward. Speaks is going to be a fan favorite in Kansas City.

The lowdown

There are some similarities between himself and current fan favorite of the Chiefs, Chris Jones. The only difference between the two is Speaks attitude on the field. He’s a fighter. He never gets tired, and each snap he seems to be head hunting out there. He literally tries to make an imprint on the turf whenever he makes a tackle.

The powers that be at Ole Hotty Toddy love the guy. Their love for him isn’t only because of his play on the field, but perhaps more for his style. He plays with reckless abandon, which has its downsides for sure but also has its upsides as well. That style has and will get him in trouble, but it is also something to admire. Self-control may be the biggest obstacle for Speaks as he transitions to the powder puff ways of the NFL.

Speaks has had more than his share of personal fouls called against him, and he stays in the face of the opponent a little too long after the play. These antics will have to be boxed up, but also became the main source of why fans loved him.

Speaks is a funny guy. He’s a good interview for the press and very entertaining if you keep your eye on him during the game. There is a good chance you’ve already seen “the wave”.

Look for Speaks to make an immediate impact for Kansas City. Even at the pro level, teams will not like playing against him, which is a very good thing for Chiefs fans. When you have a guy like him, someone who defenses are paying attention to, it’s always a big deal. There are enough players on the team for opposing offenses to worry about already in Eric Berry, Justin Houston, and Kendall Fuller.

Personal Bio

At 6’3″, 285 pounds, Breeland Speaks has the athleticism to be moved out to the edge position. The comparison to Tamba Hali suggests that is exactly where he will be used the most.
