Sporting Kansas City had an opportunity to get further ahead in the Western Conference, but came away from their Sunday match against the Sounders with a draw.

Normally a draw against the Seattle Sounders would be okay for Sporting Kansas City, at least for points sakes, but in a year where Seattle is off to a bad start, this was a prime opportunity for Sporting KC to take advantage. They ended up with just one point against the struggling Sounders.

Sporting was able to take a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute, but Seattle notched things up before the half. The Sounders really made Sporting fans sweat when they scored an ugly goal to go up 2-1. Fortunately, Graham Zusi came to the rescue and tied the match at 2-2, which was Sunday’s final. It was Zusi’s second goal of the year.

The frigid temperatures didn’t stop the fans from flocking out to Children’s Mercy Park and while it wasn’t three points, things could have been worse for sure. Sporting walked away from the match with a point. That’s certainly better than losing it all together, especially to a team like Seattle, who despite struggling so far this season, has been to the last two MLS Cups.

Fans are hoping that the temperatures warm up for Sporting’s match with Vancouver on Friday, which will be the second match at Children’s Mercy Park in less than a week.

Sporting KC vs. Seattle Sounders FC, recap, score, 4/15/18 [Sam McDowell, The Kansas City Star]

"After finishing without a goal in 2017, Zusi scored for the second time this season, dribbling through the Seattle defense before chipping one past keeper Stefan Frei. Zusi has scored twice in a month after going 17 months between goals, a streak that coincided with his move to the defensive line."

"Graham Zusi and Ilie Sanchez scored to help Sporting Kansas City draw with the Seattle Sounders 2-2 on Sunday."

Injury Report: Felipe Gutierrez remains questionable heading into #SKCvsSEA [Patrik Bergabo, Sporting KC’s website]

The last link was included because Felipe Gutierrez’s absence has been big. Sporting is still doing okay without him, but Gutierrez was one of the bright spots early on in the season. Hopefully he’ll be able to play again soon.

Sporting KC is off to a 4-1-2 start this season and their offense looks promising, but they allowed two goals to a Seattle team that had yet to put the ball in the back of the net. The Sounders had struggled this year, but nearly came away with a victory on the road in one of the toughest atmospheres.

Sporting Kansas City will host the Vancouver Whitecaps on Friday. Vancouver has lost their last two matches, but they played their last game on Friday, so they’ll have a week to rest up for Friday’s match while Sporting has just five days.
