KC Royals news mostly surrounds that of the cold bat of Alex Gordon, but also, on a brighter note… OPENING DAY IS LESS THAN A WEEK AWAY!!!!

Spring training has flown by and Kansas City Royals fans couldn’t be more excited for Opening Day next Thursday at Kauffman Stadium. It’s the Royals’ first true Opening Day since 2016 (after they won the World Series and were in a rematch against the Mets in that first series).

Royals fans hope that Alex Gordon has figured things out by Opening Day, but it’s not likely considering how much he’s struggled since signing the franchise’s largest contract after the 2015 season. He’s currently batting .122 in 49 at bats, but that’s much improved from his .083 that he was hitting in the middle of the week.

Gordon is 34 years old and his age is starting to show. Athletes get old fast and we’re seeing that happening with Gordon right before our very eyes. If he can bat above the Mendoza line (preferably above .225 even), then Royals fans might actually take that at this point.

"Sure, spring training doesn’t mean much, but when a guy is hitting THIS poorly in spring training, yeah, it should be concerning, especially when he hasn’t been hitting well the last two years."

"The field maybe the most pristine and well kept in the sport, but that’s just where it starts. Royals fans have one the best game day experiences in the league from the moment they arrive into the parking lot until they leave."

What should the Royals do if Alex Gordon is still terrible this year? [Max Rieper, Royals Review]

Royals’ Alex Gordon to get minor league at-bats during camp [Maria Torres, The Kansas City Star]

We’ve been looking forward to Opening Day since the beginning of spring training, but Gordon’s poor performance over the past month has rained on that parade. Sure, we’re all psyched to get back to the K and see meaningful baseball being played, but should we be worrying about Alex Gordon? The answer is of course we should be.

Gordon is the type of guy who wants to earn every bit of that contract and everyone KNOWS he’s trying. Sometimes age catches up to you and that, in turn, affects your reflexes at the plate. Gordon is still an elite defender, which is why he’s still needed on the Royals roster.

Well, that and the fact that the Royals are paying him way too much money to sit on the bench. That’d be unfathomable if he were to be designated for assignment with so much more money left on the books.

Hopefully it won’t come to that and Gordon will begin to figure things out offensively. If not, then at least we have his game-tying home run in Game 1 of the 2015 World Series. That was pretty cool.
