The first week of free agency has come and gone with defensive options and running back visits being the talk around Kansas City Chiefs news.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been active in free agency, but still not as active as everyone wants. They quickly signed wide receiver Sammy Watkins and middle linebacker Anthony Hitchens. The Chiefs also kept some of their own free agents including Anthony Sherman and Dustin Colquitt.

But this hasn’t been enough for a lot of fans in Chiefs Kingdom. A lot of fans and local media have been clamoring for a big name safety and defensive lineman to fill in on the defense. Some of that was silenced when the Chiefs sured up the defensive line by signing Xavier Williams out of Arizona.

This fills a hole at nose tackle that was the most needed because the team did not have one on the roster. So at this point that’s another spot checked off the wish list but there are still plenty to go. They still need more depth at corner and safety seems to be at the top of almost every fan in KC.

The offensive side of the ball has been locked down pretty well after the signing of Chad Henne as backup quarterback. But that hasn’t kept them from bringing in veteran running backs for reasons that aren’t quite clear to most fans.

Thomas Rawls and Damien Williams have both been confirmed to have visited the Chiefs in the last week. While I am ok with cutting Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West, I don’t understand the reason to replace them with another costly veteran.

The Chiefs may not be making as many moves as some fans would like, but it’s safe to say the moves they’ve made have been good. This team is better today than it was at the end of last season and we haven’t even hit the draft yet.

"The Kansas City Chiefs have been kicking the tires on various defensive linemen in their hopes to bolster the position in free agency. Now they have finally made their first outside addition to the depth chart with the signing of Xavier Williams, a defensive tackle who previously played for the Arizona Cardinals."

"Spotrac list the Chiefs current salary cap figure at just under $12 million. That number sounds like a fair amount but it actually puts them in the lower third of the league. This means that while they have some space, they could easily be out bid for any players by most of the league."

With free agency in full swing and the Chiefs having made multiple moves, it’s time to start looking forward to my personal favorite time of year; draft time! The draft is where the foundation of championship teams are built.

Free agents are important parts of teams and picking the right player can make or break a championship contender. But to even hit that point you have to first hit in the draft. This year is exciting because it is the first draft of Chiefs general manager Brett Veach. Which means we don’t know what kind of player he likes and what his draft strategy is.

Over the next two months we’ll all spend hours upon hours staring at draft books and watching pro days. They’ll be article after article about who fits and what position is important. And I can’t wait to get started!
