In a recent report by Thrillist, Kansas basketball fans are among the most obnoxious basketball fans in the country. Here is my rebuttal.

You are absolutely correct. Kansas basketball fans are some of the most obnoxious fans on earth, in any sport. They are darn proud of it too. Go ahead, ask them. If winning annoys you, get better. If the Rock Chalk Jayhawk chant annoys you, don’t allow it to happen. If you hear the chant, you’ve lost.

Kansas Jayhawks fans are some of the worse fans on earth if you ask those in Columbia, Missouri, or Manhattan and Wichita, Kansas. It’s hard to not be vocal as a Jayhawk fan. All the Jayhawks do year after year is win. And win and win some more.

The report hit on a few reasons why the Jayhawks faithful are so obnoxious, but what really bothered me is that we were only ranked 15th out of 16 schools. Who the heck is being more obnoxious than us? Kansas fans need to step their game up.

Sure, Lawrence, Kansas is the crowned jewel of basketball towns. The court is named after the inventor of the game. Allen Field House is as raucous and loud as a basketball arena can be, just ask Guinness, it’s in the record books.

More Kansas fans show up to watch open practice than some schools can get against their biggest rival. The Jayhawks drink tiger blood before each game and in the words of Charlie Sheen, “winning” is the Jayhawk tradition.

Sure Kansas fans will be quick to tell you how great their program is. Why would they not mention it? If you hate the Jayhawks, and find their fans obnoxious, it’s more than likely because your school hasn’t won 14 straight conference titles. It’s alright, go ahead and check. Your team hasn’t, no team has other than Kansas.

Maybe it’s because people don’t have a coach that has been at their school as long as Bill Self has, and their coach has more home losses than conference titles. Maybe you hate on Kansas as a program, so it’s likely you hate on their fans.

The Jayhawks do get the elite recruits, what sets them apart from everyone else is that Kansas keeps coming at you. Take this current run, the Jayhawks are led by two seniors in Devonte’ Graham and Svi Mykhailiuk. Four year guys. Graham replaced another four-year guy in Frank Mason, the 2017 National Player of the Year. Graham may just win that title this season as well.

More times than not people dislike teams that win if it isn’t their own. The Patriots wouldn’t be hated on as much in the NFL if they didn’t continue to make Super Bowl visit after Super Bowl visit. Neither would the Golden State Warriors in the NBA, or the Crimson Tide in college football.

If winning is obnoxious, then we as Kansas fans will wear that label with pride. Rest assure we will be extra obnoxious about it too. If you don’t like the fact that Kansas keeps winning, I suggest you and your team do something about it, because I seriously doubt Bill Self cares what you think. I doubt the players, students, faculty, and fans care what you think.

Win or lose, we Jayhawks fans are proud of their team, what they stand for, and what they deliver. We appreciate coach Self, and each player from the star to the guy at the end of the bench. Sometimes that kid on the end of the bench is loved even more.
