Sporting Kansas City: Offense steps up big time in last two games
Sporting Kansas City has won their last two games and it’s all thanks to their strong offensive showing. This looks to be a whole new team early on in the season.
After a 3-2 victory against the San Jose Earthquake, Sporting Kansas City has a winning record after just three games. Getting shutout 2-0 in the season opener didn’t instill confidence in the fan base, but Sporting has rebounded nicely since then.
Last week against Chicago, they won 4-3 and they added another W on the season in a 3-2 victory on St. Patrick’s Day against the Earthquake. This offensive output has been nice to see, but it’s certainly not the Sporting Kansas City we’ve been used to watching over the past few seasons.
Graham Zusi scored on Saturday and that was his first goal since the 2016 season. The goal was magnificent and it almost made you wonder how Zusi didn’t score at all last year.
Felipe Gutierrez impressed mightily on Saturday and should be a nice staple for this Sporting KC squad moving forward. With a few key guys hitting free agency this offseason, it’d be nice to see the younger players step up.

Sporting KC offense on display once more in first home victory of 2018 [Sam McDowell, Kansas City Star]
"With offense. Sporting KC has seven goals in its past two games after opening the season with a dud. It did not score seven in a two-game span in any match in the past two seasons."
Sporting Kansas City beats San Jose 3-2, Graham Zusi scores first goal since 2016 [Ashley Scoby, Pro Soccer USA]
"But it was Zusi’s goal that got the announced crowd of 18,868 at Children’s Mercy Park particularly riled up. Flirting around the right side, Zusi coaxed the ball down the line of the box to the halfway point. The ball settled onto his left foot, and he launched it into the top left corner with just inches to spare."
#SKCvsSJ Quotes: “We showed a real hunger” [Kurt Austin, Sporting Kansas City’s website]
"Sporting Kansas City defender Graham ZusiOn scoring the team’s second goal…I got it out wide and started dribbling in. I think at least three of our guys made great runs in behind them. It made their defense commit a little bit to the ball and it opened up for a shot."
Next up for Sporting Kansas City is a trip to Colorado to face off with the Rapids. Colorado has played just one game so far and lost that match 2-1. They’ll be eager to get in the win column and with this being the home opener for the Rapids, look for Sporting KC to really have to fight for their third straight victory.
It’s a long season, but fans have to like what they’ve seen out of Sporting Kansas City so far. They’ve rebounded nicely these past two weeks after getting shut out in the season opener.
Let’s hope the success continues!
