Kansas City Chiefs news revolves around the team being linked to a few different quarterbacks and about what the team could do in free agency this month.

While the Kansas City Chiefs have their quarterback of the future in Patrick Mahomes, the need for a backup signal caller is still prominent. There have been a few different players who have been rumored to be a fit for the Chiefs and neither option is all that compelling.

One option has been Teddy Bridgewater, who is coming off two straight seasons of not starting due to a gruesome injury he suffered in training camp. Bridgewater was drafted by the Vikings near the end of the first round in 2014 and will more than likely be hitting free agency. Obviously if he came to Kansas City, he’d be a backup, but the hope is that the team would be able to trade him if he performed well in the preseason.

Another name linked to the KC Chiefs has been DeShone Kizer, who the team would actually have to trade for, as opposed to sign. Why the Chiefs would trade for a quarterback who won zero games last year is beyond me, but Kizer is only 22 years old so there’s still hope he could turn into an NFL starter.

  • The Chiefs would be better off going after a veteran backup quarterback rather than Bridgewater or Kizer because those two players are young also. Neither would help Mahomes develop the way someone like Chase Daniel or Ryan Fitzpatrick could help him in the long run.

As far as free agency is concerned, it should be spent on some defensive players, but at the same time, it could make sense for this team to go all out on offense. That’ll be the strength of the 2018 Chiefs after all.

DeShone Kizer should not be Chiefs backup [Britt Zank, KC Kingdom]

"The film on Kizer shows a quarterback who just isn’t an NFL quarterback. The idea that the Kansas City Chiefs would want to trade for the stench of a player with his game film is beyond me."

Teddy Bridgewater makes little sense for the Chiefs [Leigh Oleszczak, KC Kingdom]

"I’m really not about this signing and it’s not because I don’t think Bridgewater is any good. I think the kid is talented and could be a starter somewhere. That would not be his role in Kansas City, so why bring him here?"

NFL rumors: Dontari Poe has “huge market” waiting in free agency [Matt Conner, Arrowhead Addict]

"Could Poe return to the Chiefs? The team could certainly use his presence especially if Bennie Logan leaves after a single year on the team."

Chiefs to meet with several defensive backs at NFL combine [Terez Paylor, Kansas City Star]

The recent rumors of Star Lotulelei being linked to the Kansas City Chiefs is awesome news. Lotulelei has had a nice career for the Carolina Panthers, racking up 88 tackles and 11.5 sacks in five seasons.

What jumps out to me about Lotulelei is the fact that he’s started all 16 games the past two seasons. You can never underestimate how important health is in the NFL, especially for a pass rusher on the Chiefs roster. That’s an area where they’ve struggled to avoid injuries.

With the Chiefs making some big time trades this offseason and freeing up cap space in the process, fans should expect them to go big in free agency. While free agency isn’t what wins teams Super Bowls, it definitely can help get them to that level.

Even just adding one or two key guys this offseason could be huge for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018. Hopefully they can get some good talent and not waste time on trading for guys like DeShone Kizer.
