The Kansas City Chiefs are in need of a backup quarterback and a recent rumor has suggested that DeShone Kizer could become that guy in Kansas City.

Backup quarterback maybe a need for the Kansas City Chiefs, but it’s not a gaping hole. Patrick Mahomes is the unquestioned starting quarterback and leader of the team. At 6’2 and 230 pounds he’s a big quarterback with little injury history. With that said, a backup should be looked at simply as another coach and scout team player.

This means it would not be smart of the Chiefs to go sign an expensive free agent or trade valuable assets to fill the backup quarterback position. In the case of adding former second round pick DeShone Kizer, it would take the trade for assets, as he’s only going into year two of his rookie four-year contract.

It probably wouldn’t take a major trade seeing as how Kizer is coming off a rookie season in which he went 0-15 and threw just 11 touchdowns to 22 interceptions. More than likely, the trade would require a late round draft pick as compensation so it wouldn’t be overly expensive for a quarterback who was the first rookie signal caller to play in regular season action.

If I was an NFL general manager, I wouldn’t go anywhere near Kizer.

Even at that price Kizer is not a player the Chiefs should touch. In 15 games he only threw for 2,894 yards with a poor completion percentage of 53%. If those numbers aren’t depressing enough, he only threw 11 touchdowns to 22 interceptions and lost six fumbles. He accounted for more turnovers than any other player in the league.

I don’t see anything about those stats and what he did on the field as someone I would want on the Chiefs in any role. The backup quarterback for the Chiefs this season needs to be nothing more than an extra set of eyes on the coaching staff. Nothing about Kizer’s play last season says anyone should trust what he sees with his eyes.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

The idea behind bringing Kizer in is that Andy Reid could coach him up. Maybe he plays a few games and look good, then the Chiefs could flip him for a decent trade. That logic blows my mind for multiple reasons.

First is the idea that Reid is this quarterback guru who can automatically fix anyone when history says that’s not true. Kevin Kolb is really the only quarterback he’s gotten the best out of then flipped, so the odds of Kizer being the next Kolb is highly unlikely.

The next thing I don’t understand is why do people assume the backup will play any games for the Chiefs? In five years under Alex Smith the backup quarterback only started four games with two coming due to injury (2014 with the lacerated spleen and 2016 with the concussion-like symptoms). As I said earlier, Mahomes is a good size quarterback with little injury history so I don’t see him being someone who misses many games.

Finally how many quarterbacks get flipped these days?  Jimmy Garoppolo only got a single second round pick. I don’t think anyone has any fantasies that Kizer would ever be viewed as highly as Garoppolo. Is it worth a fifth round pick in the hopes that maybe someday if everything went well you’d get back a fourth? Just seems like a waste of time.

If I was an NFL general manager, I wouldn’t go anywhere near Kizer. In just one season he proved he’s not an NFL caliber quarterback. It’s one thing to make a lot of turnovers or have a bad record in your rookie season. Plenty of hall of fame quarterbacks have had those issues (Peyton Manning and Troy Aikman come to mind), but those quarterbacks also had games and film that showed they had the talent.

The film on Kizer shows a quarterback who just isn’t an NFL quarterback. The idea that the Kansas City Chiefs would want to trade for the stench of a player with his game film is beyond me. His best case scenario is not worth the draft pick and stench of failure he brings to a young retooling team looking to build something special.
