On a special night for fans, coach Self, and Kansas Basketball as a whole, the Jayhawks dominated the Sooners in both halves for their best game of 2018.
Special moments aren’t rare to Kansas Basketball fans. These moments happen multiple times each season for the Jayhawks. For the second time in three days, fans have enjoyed quite the show. Perhaps for the first time this season, Kansas played great for the full 40 minutes.
On a night that the Jayhawks hung the jersey of Sherron Collins high in the rafters, they gave Oklahoma the beat down of the season for their 6th straight loss. The game was essentially over after Devonte’ Graham made a three with 19:15 remaining in the first half. The score was three to nothing. It wouldn’t get any closer.
Kansas looked unbeatable against the Sooners. They made Trae Young look half of the player he actually is, holding him to a career low 11 points. It almost seemed disrespectful in a twisted kind of way. Don’t these Jayhawks know who Young is?

They came out looking confident, there were very little mistakes made and absolutely no hesitation with Graham and his teammates. Malik Newman went off for 20 points to go with Graham’s game high 23. All in all, six players scored over 10 points including a sweet, sweet surprise.
Silvio De Sousa played 13 minutes, and for the first time since arriving, left his mark. Sousa scored 10 points while collecting 6 rebounds. He was 3-3 from the field and 4-4 from the charity stripe. His arrival could mean really good things for Kansas going forward.
Mitch Lightfoot wowed the crowd with three blocks and an alley-oop dunk in just a couple of minute span. Everything clicked for the Jayhawks on this night. Everything dropped for them too. Kansas shot almost 70% from the field and 55% from three. Those numbers are ridiculous. This looked like a completely different team than three weeks ago. Kansas is simply playing lights out.
Trae Young did his part in lighting a fire before the game with some questionable comments about Bill Self and honoree Sherron Collins. Suggesting Self doesn’t send point guards to the NBA and suggesting he didn’t know who Collins was. Self’s current point guard straight schooled Young on the night.
Next: Best seasons all-time for Kansas Basketball
What seemed like a long shot just days ago, Kansas now gets ready for Texas Tech in a battle for first place. This was by far the best Kansas has played all year. The momentum is now on Kansas’ side, and the road to the championship still goes through Lawrence. When it comes to Kansas or the field, it’s hard not to take Kansas.
