It’s been no secret that Kansas Basketball has struggled this season. Still, they sit just one game back in the conference race behind Texas Tech.

This has been one of the most tumultuous seasons Bill Self and Kansas Basketball has had in quite some time. From the Billy Preston debacle, to a stream of rare home losses, things have been different.

Now, with only five games remaining in conference play, the Jayhawks are looking up from 2nd place at the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The Jayhawks have a date with Tech on the 24th, but West Virginia and Oklahoma are standing in the way.

The scenario is actually fairly clear. If the Jayhawks win out, they will win or have a share of their 14th consecutive conference title. Make no mistake about it, the Jayhawks want that record. Winning out is the only sure thing that Kansas has control over.

At times though, Kansas seems as though they are just racing to get this season over with. Kansas has a monster of a team coming in 2018, and the 2017 season is ready to be an object in the rear view mirror. The 2017 season is much closer than it appears. It’s still going. Kansas Still finds themselves hanging around the top ten, but this season has the feel of utter disappointment.

Kansas has yet to really blow out opponents at home, they haven’t looked dominant in any game against major programs. One glaring issue, it’s been quite some time since fans have seen multiple players have a good game at the same time. Devonte’ Graham hasn’t sat on the bench since his freshman season, Lagerald Vick has lost his NBA draft stock, Svi hasn’t been able to do what makes him good, which is shoot the ball, and Udoka Azubuike can’t get out of foul trouble.

Those reasons are consistent game in and game out. Those have to change.

Kansas will need to put two quality halves together for five straight games. This is something they haven’t done for quite some time as well. This isn’t only important for the conference win streak, but for the momentum going into March Madness. If the Jayhawks continue to limp through the remainder of the season, a first weekend exit should be expected in the tournament.
