Royals rumors are still kicking despite pitchers and catchers reporting to Spring Training and the rest heading out pretty soon. Jon Heyman made predictions for the biggest free agents, two being former Royals.

Kansas City Royals fans would have never thought that both Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas would still be without teams at this point of the offseason, but that’s just the kind of offseason baseball has experienced. With the two former Royals still sitting on the market, Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports went ahead and made predictions as to where they’d end up.

Surprisingly, Heyman pegged the Padres as the suitor for Hosmer’s services and predicted Moustakas to remain with the Royals. This is not something that Royals fans would have expected just a few weeks ago, but Moose has gotten very little buzz on the market, and it could make sense for the Royals to retain him rather than Hosmer.

Here is what Jon Heyman had to say on both players,

  • "HOSMER:The Padres and Royals by all appearances have been the two leading contenders for months, without a change. Without knowing exactly where each team stands, and just assuming they are close with their financial offers, the guess here is he might judge that San Diego is closer to getting to the World Series.~~~MOUSTAKAS:The Royals like Moustakas and may bring him back (but it might be more likely for Moustakas to stay should Hosmer go elsewhere), the Yankees like Moustakas very much and would consider it (but they might need to move money) and the Braves have thought about it (but seem to prefer a one-year deal)."

This has been an MLB offseason like none other, as very few free agents have signed. Yu Darvish got the party going over the weekend, inking a six-year deal with the Cubs, but that was the first “big name” to sign somewhere.

Hosmer will set the pace for the rest of the market and it appears to be between the Royals and Padres right now, as Heyman mentioned. For those of you who read my content regularly, you’ll know that I’m not real keen on the Royals retaining Hosmer because it’ll really strap them for cash in the future.

Eric Hosmer has been the main story this offseason when it comes to Royals rumors and it’s getting tiring discussing it so much. Unfortunately until Hosmer does indeed ink a deal somewhere, this is going to continue to be the talk of the town.

As far as re-signing Mike Moustakas goes, I’m not opposed to it, but the Royals already have Cheslor Cuthbert at third base. Moose had a career year in 2017, but he was nicked up near the end of the year and it showed. That could play a large role in why he hasn’t been signed yet.

Moustakas appeared to want to play somewhere on the west coast initially, but the Giants traded for Evan Longoria and the Angels added Zack Cozart to play third base. That left Moose on the outside looking in and he could now be forced into signing a one-year contract somewhere.

If the Kansas City Royals plan to rebuild, they really should just part ways with their free agents and tear it all down. Hosmer is going to be really expensive and Moustakas never really appeared to be in the future plans from the beginning of the offseason.

What do you think, Royals fans? Do you think Hosmer could go to the Padres and Moose could stay in Kansas City?
