The Kansas City Chiefs offense is about to get a lot more dynamic. Adding another playmaker could be a huge step. Michael Gallup of Colorado State offers that.

One area of the Kansas City Chiefs offense that didn’t excel last year was the wide receiver spot opposite of Tyreek Hill. For multiple reasons, the Chiefs struggled to find consistency at that position, and it often resulted in missed opportunities. Kansas City may choose to address that in the draft, and Michael Gallup of Colorado State is one of my favorite options.

Now the Kansas City offense does already have a good bit of young talent. Chris Conley, Demarcus Robinson, and Jehu Chesson are all playing on rookie contracts. The Chiefs will also have to decide on whether to retain De’Anthony Thomas and Albert Wilson. That means this position group may be full as far as the KC coaching staff and front office are concerned.

However, while each of those players offers something, none of them has emerged as a consistent threat for the Kansas City offense. Each player has flashed at one point or another, but the Chiefs have to know they can rely on the guy in that position. That may mean KC is willing to make another addition through the draft.

Under Andy Reid, the Kansas City Chiefs have made an effort to get faster on offense. That’s paid off in some cases, but not all of them. If the Chiefs can find another speedy receiver that also brings solid hands to the table, that would be an ideal situation. Michael Gallup is that kind of a wide receiver.

Michael Gallup is a catch-and-run receiver who plays a very solid all-around game. Changes direction well and is explosive out of his cuts to create separation. Good hands and shows the ability to make catches away from his body. Competitive player who doesn’t shy away from contact or a challenge.

Stat To Know: Michael Gallup was the first FBS player to hit 1000 yards in 2017.

The biggest knock on Michael Gallup is probably that he’s not elite at anything. He’s got good speed, but not great. Strong receiver, but can get pressed. Good hands, but sometimes has to double clutch. It’s not enough to really ding him in any one area, but enough to keep his draft stock lower than it should be.

Attack Everything

My conclusions on Michael Gallup are that he is a prototypical Andy Reid receiver, making him perfect for the Kansas City Chiefs offense. In a lot of ways, I felt like I was watching another version of Jeremy Maclin. I really can’t think of many receivers in this draft who would be a better fit for KC than Gallup is.

That’s definitely a key consideration too. The Chiefs are adopting a mindset of aggressiveness. Michael Gallup is definitely the kind of player that fits that mold. He has the physicality, athleticism, and mindset to be a constant threat to opposing defenses. That is something the KC offense should definitely be interested in.

Of course, the question of how he would fit into the Chiefs plans will definitely come about. Kansas City has a lot of young wide receiver talent that they seem to like. So while Michael Gallup may be a fit talent-wise, that doesn’t mean he’ll fit into the team’s plans. The KC offense can get better, but the investment has to make sense.

The big stars of the Kansas City Chiefs offense are all well known. However, there are a lot of role player positions that are up for grabs. The Chiefs need to find some players that can consistently be a threat to the opposing defense. Michael Gallup has all the traits to be that kind of a player.
