The Philadelphia Eagles have won the Super Bowl. In an alternate universe it would be the Kansas City Chiefs that had just won the championship.

On January 14th of 2016, the Kansas City Chiefs shocked the football world. In an unreal move, Andy Reid and Alex Smith were shown the door, leaving Doug Pederson to take the reins. Without going after a quarterback in the draft or free agency, the Chiefs made an unprecedented move and decided to stay in-house. Nick Foles, in an unpopular and nervous decision would be the quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Foles was happy to go back to retirement, which he came out of to play for Andy Reid. However, Foles had been comfortable around coach Pederson, and decided to be there if Pederson needed him. Pederson needed him.

The name of the starting quarterback is not important here, but due to unfortunate circumstances Nick Foles was called upon towards the end of the season. The Kansas City Chiefs hadn’t been back to the Super Bowl since number four. During the 2017 season they overcame injuries and years of heart ache by making it to the big game.

In the Super Bowl, the Chiefs faced destiny. Their opponent was the Philadelphia Eagles, coached by Andy Reid in his return. The opposing quarterback was none other than Alex Smith. Smith followed Reid to Philly as Pederson and Foles stayed behind in Kansas City. It seems almost unbelievable doesn’t it, like a Hollywood script or a creative piece from an irrelevant sports writer.

Foles favorite target was a tight end with sure hands. Similar to the guy at Philly, Travis Kelce was Foles go-to guy, especially in the clutch. Together, they overcame all odds and brought Kansas City a Super Bowl Championship.

Reality check

Sounds great doesn’t it?  No matter how the scenario plays in your head, whether it’s similar to the one above or it happens to be a more realistic one, the feeling of former Chiefs winning the Super Bowl stings just a bit.

Especially when a it’s a former student of Andy Reid and the former backup to Alex Smith. They are now champions of the world, while the Chiefs are as irrelevant as the scenario above. The Eagles defeating the Patriots with Nick Foles and head coach Doug Pederson proves that injuries are no excuse. It proves that anyone can get to the Super Bowl and win it.

Which is even more discouraging for the Chiefs in a way. They have barely been able to muster a win, and until recently have had a hard time making the playoffs. Yet teams like the Eagles, two years in with a new system, and just two months of having Foles take snaps have won the Super Bowl.

It’s ok to hurt a little Mr. Brisco. It’s natural to feel the sting. The probability that Chiefs fans who were rooting for the Patriots, only did so to avoid the bruising reality that Kansas City has-beens could be champs.

And to think, no cries occurred when the Chiefs didn’t bring back Foles for another season. Few made an uproar when Pederson left. Now, for the next few weeks we get to hear how the wrong guys stayed and eventually the theories will be as crazy as the one I presented here.

It’s ok Chiefs fans. It’s now Mahomes time, the 2018 season has begun.
