A free agent has finally signed! Yes, the Royals rumors are now underway and Lorenzo Cain is the first major former Royal to ink a deal. He’s headed to Milwaukee on a five-year deal worth $80 million.

We’ve waited all winter long to see where the key members of the Kansas City Royals would end up and we finally have an answer for one of them. Lorenzo Cain is going back to where his career began: the Milwaukee Brewers.

Not only is Cain going back to Milwaukee, but he’s getting a nice pay day. The center fielder will be raking in $80 million on a five-year deal and will be joining Christian Yelich in the Brewers outfield.

That contract is a steep one for a soon-to-be 32 year old outfielder who has had injury problems, but the Brewers know they have to do whatever it takes to swipe the NL Central from the Cubs and they have to do it while they still have the weapons.

This is great news for Lorenzo Cain and for the Royals too, as they’ll now get a compensatory pick from the Brewers due to Cain signing a deal for over $50 million. The pick hasn’t been determined yet, but any pick is good for a team looking to rebuild.

For what it’s worth, the Royals do play the Brewers this season and it’s a home and home for the two. This means Cain will return to Kauffman Stadium for the first time in a different uniform. Those games are on April 24th and 25th at the K. The Royals will then travel to Milwaukee on June 26th and 27th.

More from KC Kingdom

At the end of the day, it’s hard not to be happy for Lorenzo Cain. We all knew he’d be one of the free agents for sure heading to a different team and fans had come to terms with that.

Cain is a talented center fielder and hit .300 last year with 15 home runs, but the fact of the matter is that he’s in his 30s and has had a history of being bitten by the injury bug throughout his career.

Cain returning to Milwaukee is poetic though, as the Royals acquired Cain from the Brewers back in the 2010 Zack Greinke trade. The Brewers were likely kicking themselves for seeing the player Cain became and how he won the ALCS MVP in 2015 and was one of the biggest contributors in Kansas City winning a World Series in 2015.

It’s sad seeing these guys leave, but Lorenzo Cain deserves the biggest contract he can get and he wasn’t getting that kind of deal from the Royals. I hope Cain takes it to the rest of the NL Central and can continue to have a great career, even if it is in a different uniform.

Best of luck, LoCain!
