The Kansas Basketball program almost always brings in great young talent, and 2018 will be no different as they have the number one recruiting class.

Bill Self has never had a problem bringing talent to Kansas Basketball. Neither did Roy Williams or Larry Brown for that matter. The 2018 class may be his best yet. In the final segment (for now) of the 2018 recruit collection, we take a look at a big man who may be more powerful around the rim than Udoka Azubuike. That man is David McCormack.

The Oak Hill Academy center comes with a certain flare and attitude. He is an intimidating force down low and teamed up well with fellow Kansas freshman Billy Preston. Preston more than likely won’t be around when David arrives in Lawrence of course.

The 6’9″ 255 pound center is a bully on the court. Constantly swatting away smaller competition like flies and slamming down dunks you can feel all the way to Topeka. Even as a freshman, David McCormack was dominant against elite talent.

2017-2018 roster possibilities

The combination of McCormack with fellow incoming freshmen Devon Dotson, Silvio De Sousa (early arrival), Quentin Grimes would be a formidable team no matter who you put out on the court with them. The additions of transfers K.J. Lawson, his brother Dedric and Charlie Moore would consist of a roster worthy of not only conference title hopes once again, but National title hopes as well.

But wait, there’s more. It looks like Udoka is still a year away from thoughts of the NBA, and Malik Newman has struggled so far this season. The rise of Lagerald Vick could see him leave early, but Mitch Lightfoot and Sam Cunliffe will still be on the roster.

There’s even more. If Billy Preston doesn’t see the court, or very little of it, there is a good chance he stays anther year as well, possibly. Dotson’s teammate Zion Williamson still hasn’t signed either, so there is perhaps a chance the Jayhawks nab him as well.

Here is a realistic yet slightly optimistic lineup for the 2018-2019 season.

  • Center: Udoka Azubuike, David McCormack
  • Forward: Dedric Lawson, Silvio De Sousa, Mitch Lightfoot, (Billy Preston)
  • Guard: K.J. Lawson, Quentin Grimes, Charlie Moore, Devon Dotson, Marcus Garrett, Sam Cunliffe, (Lagerald Vick, Malik Newman)

If Preston and Vick decide to leave early, this team should still start the 2018 season ranked number one. That would put the roster at 12. The chances of seeing one of the above kids already on the roster transfer to another school is a possibility, as playing time will be sparse. A comfortable problem to have considering Bill Self is bringing on football players to fill out his bench this season.

McCormack will give Self two talented, NBA big men, which is the type of roster he likes to have most. Either way, the 2018 roster will be the most talented team from bench end to bench end Kansas Basketball may have ever seen in Lawrence.
