Kansas Basketball: Watch hopeful addition Silvio De Sousa
By Chris Taylor
Kansas Basketball is hoping to have Silvio De Sousa wearing a Jayhawk uniform by January 10th. It is quite apparent that help is much needed for the run of 14.
Kansas Basketball has been here before. A mid-season slump right before conference play. It has happened to more talented Jayhawk teams with more depth. For whatever reason this slump comes and goes every couple of seasons.
The fact that the Jayhawks are going through this slump during this specific season has fans and alumni nervous. There isn’t one Kansas fan that would tell you the run for 14 straight conference championships isn’t one of the biggest and most important goals for Kansas this season. Records are extremely important to Kansas and its faithful. Just visit Allen Fieldhouse for proof.
So here we are, the Jayhawks have fallen out the top ten after two losses to lesser teams, and barely escaped Nebraska. Barely escaped Nebraska? The Jayhawks need help, the final and last installment of potential help for 2017 comes in Silvio De Sousa.

We have already taken a look at Sam Cunliffe, who is on the roster and available. We also looked at Billy Preston, whose future is still in limbo. So De Sousa is now the guy fans are waiting on. There is still a possibility he will stay in school, but he has voiced his opinion of wanting to join the team this season.
This kid is special
De Sousa is a 6’9′ power forward weighing in at 249 pounds. His inside game is unlike anything fans have seen at the university of Kansas for some time. His interior defense is superb, blocking everything that comes through. He has the ability on occasion to step outside and shoot the three as well. All of these attributes can be seen in the two videos below. It’s just a matter of how quickly Silvio can learn the system.
When watching De Sousa play, one thing that stands out is the amount of time he is in the air. He practically never comes down. His athleticism may be the best of all players you will see in a Jayhawk uniform this season.
No doubt that Bill Self, the Jayhawks, and the possibility of grabbing their record 14th straight conference title rests on the availability and production of all three, Cunliffe, Preston, and possibly most importantly Silvio De Sousa.
All we can do is wait. It is still up in the air as to what Cunliffe can provide this struggling Kansas Basketball squad. Preston is almost an afterthought anymore, if he is able to play he will be welcomed with open arms, if he doesn’t see the court, he will be forgotten in time.

The shame in Preston’s case is that if the Jayhawks fail to garnish this record that is 13 years in the making, a lot of the blame will be put on his shoulders, whether he cares or not.
Silvio can be that difference maker, although Bill Self will likely have to have his best coaching performance yet throughout Big 12 play if this record is to belong to Kansas.
