The Kansas basketball team will attempt to bounce back from their first loss of the season when they host the Arizona State Sun Devils on Sunday afternoon.

The Kansas basketball team received a rude awakening this week.

The Kansas Jayhawks hope to recover from their poor performance earlier in the week when the Arizona State Sun Devils visit Allen Fieldhouse on Sunday.

The Jayhawks were thoroughly outplayed and outcoached by Washington Wednesday night at the Sprint Center. Kansas appeared unprepared and unfocused, and when their normal gameplan failed, they did not seem to have a Plan B.

While Arizona State is not a national powerhouse, they are 7-0, with wins over Kansas State and a ranked Xavier team.

Billy Preston Watch – nothing new on this front. The team is still in wait-and-see mode.

KANSAS BASKETBALL NOTES

Look for this game to be a run-and-gun shootout. The Jayhawks average 88.5 points per game and the Sun Devils tally 92.7 points per outing.

As the senior leader of this team, Devonte’ Graham cannot have any more games as he did against Washington. Graham hit just one of his eight field goal attempts and missed both of his free throws on his way to an abysmal three-point performance.

He got little help from fellow guards Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk and Malik Newman. They each scored eight but Mykhailiuk missed nine of his 12 shots, and Newman did nothing for most of the game before hitting two meaningless threes in the waning moments when the game was all but decided.

KANSAS BASKETBALL STATISTICAL LEADERS

More from Kansas Jayhawks

  • Points – Lagerald Vick – 17.9 ppg
  • Rebounds – Udoka Azubuike – 7.3 rpg
  • Assists – Graham – 7.6 apg
  • Steals – Graham – 2.3 spg
  • Blocks – Mitch Lightfoot – 1.9 bpg
  • Field Goal Percentage – Azubuike – 77.6 percent
  • Three-point Percentage – Vick – 53.8 percent

The Jayhawks must find another way to score if opponents take away the three-point shot as Washington did. Big 12 opponents are going to guard Kansas beyond the arc, so they need work on what they need to do when that happens.

Last season, Frank Mason III could take most people off the dribble, drive, and get to the rim. Graham is not that kind of player. He isn’t as quick or as physical. This isn’t a knock on Graham; it’s just Kansas no longer has that option to break down defenses.

There is no reason for Kansas basketball fans to panic, but there is some room for concern. Teams that live by the three can certainly die by the three. The Jayhawks cannot be so one dimensional as that they cannot win ball games if they are cold from behind the arc, or if opponents strip that option away from them.

Bill Self will come up with a secondary plan so hopefully, moving forward, the Jayhawks will find more ways to score
