The Kansas City Chiefs laid yet another egg against the New York Jets, now losing four straight and six out of seven. The season is now all but lost.

In the past week all the talk was whether or not the Kansas City Chiefs should bench Alex Smith for rookie Patrick Mahomes. Theories ranged anywhere from if the Chiefs lose they will bench Smith, when the Chiefs are no longer leading the division and no matter what happens Mahomes won’t see the field.

For those that were rooting for Mahomes to get in soon, their hopes and dreams were absolutely destroyed, as well as any hope to do anything in the playoffs, if they get there. Both of those possibilities were severed in a game where Alex Smith played like his job was on the line. It’s awfully hard to bench a guy that just threw for 366 yards, four touchdowns and added one carry for 70 yards.

Even though Smith has struggled as of late, this is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately league. Which is a wonderful reason for fans to forget the first five weeks of the season. What have the Chiefs done for you lately? Lose football games? In Embarrassing manners? Those first five weeks mean nothing at all this far into the season. Not only to the Chiefs but to every other NFL team as well.

Offensive Breakdown

The offensive play calling was supposedly handed to Matt Nagy, and the offense did look better for a change. Apparently Nagy doesn’t like to run the ball either. The Chiefs ran the ball only 11 times, with Kareem Hunt getting nine of those carries. Hunt was held to only 40 yards rushing.

The Chiefs threw deep six times against the jets, compared to zero times against the Bills. Five of those six passes were completions, four were touchdowns. Why on earth was it allowed to not throw deep? Those percentages are golden.

Travis Kelce had himself an outstanding first half, which is a common trend. He also disappeared during the second half. At halftime Kelce had three catches for 90 yards and two touchdowns. He finished the game with four catches and 94 yards.

Tyreek Hill was finally used the way God intended him to be used. Downfield!!!! Six catches, 185 yards receiving, and two touchdowns. Let this man single-handedly beat these teams already. He could have had more but Smith threw short on a route that would have reached pay dirt.

There were some career days and huge plays, however the defense could not change their ways.

Embarrassing Defense

Do not get mad at Marcus Peters for this loss. Yes he did throw a refs flag into the stands out of frustration. His self-ejection didn’t play a part in this loss. The guy was the only defensive player that looked like he cared out there. Two holding calls and a personal foul gave the Jets chance after chance to not only score a touchdown after settling for a field goal, but score the two point conversion as well. Keep in mind the Chiefs were well into field goal range to kick the winning field goal had that been the case.

This game not only ended reminiscent of the Oakland game, but played very similarly from the start. The defense couldn’t stop the Jets offense all game, making Josh McCown look like a Pro-Bowler as he led his team downfield drive after drive. The defensive line was atrocious, the linebackers were lackadaisical, and the secondary, well, continues to suck.

There was little energy and lazy play. Frank Zombo gave little effort for a man lucky to be out there in the first place, putting forth no effort to come up big on multiple occasions. What was seen was simply embarrassing. Perhaps Nagy can run the defense as well? Bob Sutton is working overtime to assure he retires at seasons end. The defense can’t defend, which is problematic, especially on third down.

It is understandable to think that Andy Reid could be on the hot seat if the Chiefs continue to lose. The Kansas City Chiefs have put together a seasons worth of football follies for NFL Films. The season starts fresh with the Chiefs now 6-6.
