Nebraska football got embarrassed again on Saturday and their 2017 season is officially over. Now the Cornhuskers have to try as hard as possible to sign Scott Frost as their next head coach.

*EDITOR’S NOTE – News broke on Saturday morning (after this article had been up for several hours) that Mike Riley has indeed been fired.*

Okay, so I know current Nebraska football head coach Mike Riley hasn’t been relieved of his duties yet, but we all know it’s coming. Riley’s 2017 season ended with a 56-14 blowout at the hands of the Iowa Hawkeyes and this just isn’t the type of football that Nebraska fans are used to watching.

With Riley’s time in Lincoln likely coming to an end (if it doesn’t, oh my goodness the fans will be furious), who will be the next head coach for the Nebraska football program? The one name that makes sense more than anyone else out there is Nebraska’s own Scott Frost.

Frost played quarterback for the Huskers in 1996 and 1997 (after transferring from Stanford) and had a 24-2 record during that time. Nebraska was dominant back then with Frost taking the snaps and it’d make perfect sense for him to come back to Lincoln to coach his college team.

Frost has been the head coach at Central Florida since 2015 and his Knights are on a roll this year. UCF is currently undefeated and will be facing Memphis in the AAC Championship Game next weekend. This is the type of season that Huskers fans dream of and perhaps having Frost in Lincoln could get the Cornhuskers back to that point.

The only thing stopping Frost from coming back to Nebraska is the other competition on the open market. Florida does not have a head coach at the moment and it’s been reported that they’re going to go after Frost.

With UCF playing in the championship game next week and then a bowl game not long after, we probably won’t have much news to report on Scott Frost for awhile. Even with Lars Anderson’s report (see tweet above), nothing else has been confirmed at the moment and it’s doubtful that Frost would admit to the deal even if it were true.

Nebraska hasn’t even let Mike Riley go yet and I’m glad they didn’t handle his impending fire like Arkansas did with Bret Bielema. The Razorbacks alerted Bielema that he was no longer their head coach as he was walking off the field after a last second loss to Missouri on Friday.

Mike Riley might not be anyone’s favorite head coach and clearly wasn’t the right man for the job in Lincoln, but he really does seem like a nice guy. Nebraska did the right thing by not firing him right away.

Hopefully Scott Frost does become the next head coach of Nebraska football and hopefully the Huskers can become a true powerhouse school again. It’s entirely possible too, as Frost took the Knights from going 0-12 in his inaugural season at UCF and now leading them through a magical season.

Huskers fans sure are ready for that to happen again! Let’s get Scott Frost to Lincoln as soon as possible please!
