Kansas City Chiefs: Should Chiefs fans be worried about the Chargers

When it comes to the AFC West, the Los Angeles Chargers typically haven’t been in the thick of things. This season, however, Kansas City Chiefs fans should start to keep an eye on them.

Weeks before the regular season began, I wrote a piece about how the Los Angeles Chargers were being overlooked in the AFC West. While the Kansas City Chiefs knocked the Chargers off in week three, we’ve seen that a lot can change between weeks three and 12 of the regular season.

After that game, Kansas City was 3-0 while Los Angeles was 0-3. The Chiefs eventually moved to 5-0 and the Chargers moved to 0-4 the next week, but since then the Bolts have gone 4-2 on the year. They could be in prime position to make some noise in the AFC.

As of now, the Chiefs are leading the AFC West, but not by much, especially if they lose to Buffalo on Sunday. Los Angeles might have started off poorly, but they’ve turned their season around and have gotten hot at the right time. The Chiefs, on the other hand, have cooled down and have picked a terrible time to do so.

This could be one dangerous team heading into the final month of the regular season.

The Chargers are coming off a 28-6 butt whooping over the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day and the Bolts looked pretty dominant in that one. Okay, their kicking game was bad, but that was due to injury. Everything else went entirely Los Angeles’ way and that’s not a good sign for the slumping Kansas City Chiefs.

As of now, the Chiefs are 6-4 and lead the AFC West. The Chargers are now 5-6 and could be fighting for not only a Wild Card spot, but perhaps they can win out and give the AFC West title all they’ve got. This should scare Chiefs fans.

Los Angeles is reeling behind Philip Rivers, who threw for nearly 400 yards on Thursday and Keenan Allen is showing just how good he can be when healthy. Allen has gone for over 100 yards in the last two games and is becoming a legitimate number one threat in the NFL.

Not only is Los Angeles’ offense clicking, but their defense has been on fire. They allowed just six points to the Cowboys this past week and the previous week they picked off Nathan Peterman five times en route to a 54-24 victory.

While Chiefs fans are going to tell themselves whatever they want to regarding this team, it’s hard to look at the Chargers’ recent success and not fear them. Early on in the year, the Chargers faltered due to small mistakes (missing field goals being the main one). If they’ve straightened out those other issues, this could be one dangerous team heading into the final month of the regular season.

Fortunately, there’s a solution! The Kansas City Chiefs need to win out and the division will be theirs! They already slipped up against the Giants last week, so that’s their one loss they’re allowed to have for the duration of the regular season if they want to keep their comfortable lead in the AFC West.

The Chiefs and Chargers will play in week 15 on that Saturday night at Arrowhead Stadium. By then, the Chargers very well could have cooled off and hopefully the Chiefs will have heated back up, but we won’t know until that game gets here.

Maybe I’m looking too much into Thursday’s blowout win over the Cowboys, but the Los Angeles Chargers certainly look like a contender come January.
