If the Chiefs want to be mediocre, then why does allowing a quarterback that you know will be gone next season lead you there. Enter Patrick Mahomes.

Confusing is a word that suits the current Kansas City Chiefs, especially when you compare them to the Chiefs that took the world by storm early in the season. Alex Smith has been replaced by a horrible out-of-work actor trying to make a buck or two. It clearly isn’t the same person.

Much like the way they change Batman every three movies or so, we sometimes get stuck with a superhero that’s hard to root for. A new hero in Patrick Mahomes may be waiting.

The Mahomes factor was dormant as long as Alex Smith continued to impress. Since his numbers are steadily getting worse along with the Chiefs overall record, the Mahomes chants are back. WE WANT MAHOMES!!! Contrary to what I’ve written in the past, so do I.

If this is who the Kansas City Chiefs are, then yes, I would like to see what Mahomes can do. Put aside the warm feelings some of us have for what Smith has done for us, it’s time to move on.

More from KC Kingdom

If the Kansas City Chiefs are going to be this obtuse for the rest of the season, why not beat the future to the punch rather than wait until there is no other option? If the Chiefs were to lose their next two games, the idea of Mahomes seeing the field would be expected. So why wait? Few actually believe the Chiefs would tank with Mahomes at quarterback, including myself.

Why not?

Let me be clear that I had always been an advocate for Alex Smith starting this season. The difference now is the Chiefs and their Kingdom are in panic mode. If they aren’t they better be. It just makes more sense to put Mahomes in while he can salvage a good record, rather than expect him to save a season.

The amount of pressure is night and day in those two scenarios. Imagine Mahomes coming in and still leading the Chiefs to the playoffs. Next season would be a much smoother, complete transition.

What do the Chiefs gain keeping Mahomes on the bench? Doubt and insecurity is all they gain. Without a preview of Mahomes in regular season action, the unknown will engulf the offseason chatter. Can he play? Does he have what it takes to lead a winning franchise? And so on, and so on.

Seeing Mahomes play right now gives management a better idea of what they need to accomplish in the offseason. It gives season ticket holders the opportunity to purchase early if he looks anything like he did in preseason. It frees up the options the Chiefs can provide Alex Smith as well.
