The Kansas basketball team plays host Tuesday to the Texas Southern Tigers as part of the campus rounds of the Hoophall Miami Invitational.

The Kansas Jayhawks try to remain undefeated Tuesday as they take on the Texas Southern Tigers of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

The Kansas basketball team is coming off a strong performance against South Dakota State last week, despite dealing with serious depth issues due to the ongoing investigation into Billy Preston’s vehicle.

According to Matt Tait of KUSports.com, the Jayhawks still have no idea when the freshman will be available.

"Although he offered no actual update on the status of withheld forward Billy Preston, who has missed all three of KU’s regular season games so far, Kansas coach Bill Self admitted to being “worried” about the situation."

KANSAS BASKETBALL NOTES

According to Matt Galloway of the Topeka Capital-Journal, head coach Bill Self has gone to some extremes to cover for his lack of depth.

"…Bill Self, in his 15th season as KU coach, has found himself in uncharted territory. There’s perhaps no better example of this than the Jayhawks’ approximately 75-minute practice Monday…"

The Jayhawks can’t even run full practices due to the thin roster, to conserve energy for his players who are going to rack up major minutes this season.

More from Kansas Jayhawks

One area in which Kansas must improve is rebounding, especially for the frontcourt players.

Against South Dakota State, seldom-used walk-on Chris Teahan, in just four minutes, outrebounded starter Udoka Azubuike, three boards to two. Teahan matched Mitch Lightfoot‘s rebound production on the night, too.

Azubuike and Lightfoot combined for more foul (seven) than rebounds (five). These two must find a way to stay aggressive on the boards while avoiding foul trouble. With Preston out indefinitely, there is little room for error for these players.

While Texas Southern has yet to win a game in four tries, they haven’t played cupcakes. They have losses to Gonzaga, Washinton State, Ohio State, and Syracuse. None of the games were close except against Washington State, who beat them by two in overtime.

The Jayhawks need to take care of business here. They need to be methodical and work on improving their weaknesses without losing focus by playing down to a much lesser foe.

Congratulations to Bill Self for winning his 419th game against just 88 loses as the head of Kansas basketball. He passed Roy Williams to move into second place all-time at Kansas.

The Kansas basketball team needs to find a way to protect itself and remain aggressive and productive with such a thin roster. Hopefully, with every game they play, the Jayhawks will figure out how to make it work if Preston isn’t allowed to play anytime soon.
