It sucks having to write this post and even having to picture Eric Hosmer in another uniform, but we have to prepare ourselves for this exact scenario.

Royals fans have had all year to enjoy watching Eric Hosmer play with the Royals. He’s been an amazing part of this franchise and when there’s been a big moment, Hosmer has been a part of it.

Other teams are wanting to sign Hosmer for that very reason. The guy’s a winner and he knows how to excel in big moments. Teams strive to add players who have that type of leadership and mentality.

More from KC Kingdom

In a previous article by Jon Heyman, he listed how much money he thought all of the top free agents could earn in the offseason. The prediction from both Heyman and an “expert” were both for seven years and Heyman had him earning $160 million with the expert predicting $165 million.

If that’s the going rate, it’ll be tough for the KC Royals to swing that. We all love Eric Hosmer, but after seeing what’s happened with Alex Gordon after giving him a mega-deal, it’s a big risk to take and one that the Royals might not be able to afford.

The Red Sox, on the other hand, can afford pretty much any player they want without any repercussions. That’s the benefit of being a big market team, which the Royals are not. If they don’t re-sign Hosmer, then it wouldn’t be surprising if the team opted to just tear everything down and rebuild.

This was a difficult post to write, but everything happens for a reason. If Eric Hosmer comes back to Kansas City, then great! If he doesn’t, then the organization will start from scratch and retry “The Process” all over again. It worked in 2014 and 2015 after all.

No matter what happens, however, Royals fans should not be angry with Eric Hosmer. If he signs somewhere else, then so be it. It’s not a knock on the organization that drafted him, it’s for the betterment of himself and his family. Hosmer signed with Scott Boras out of high school for this very moment and he deserves to get the biggest possible paycheck. He’s earned it.

Hosmer has accomplished pretty much all he can in Kansas City and now it’s time for him to get his big payday. Every athlete deserves that. The least Royals fans can do is understand where Hosmer is coming from and let him live his life. He’s done so much for this team and for this town. We’ll wish him the best of luck wherever he goes.
