The Kansas Jayhawks are 2-0 after last night’s victory over the Kentucky Wildcats, thanks in no part to Billy Preston.

Dear Mr. Billy Preston,

The Kansas Jayhawks just beat historic rival Kentucky, but where were you? A top ten matchup, in primetime, between two of the most recognized and decorated teams in the sport, with Dick Vitale calling the game, and you are looking fly on the bench with your gold chains and snazzy outfit.

Through two weeks Jayhawk fans have been salivating at the chance to see you play, both times they were left disappointed. For no reasons but your own you have chosen to put yourself in a position that could jeopardize your future, and your name.

See, Kansas University isn’t like other schools, most Kansas fans will tell you that KU invented the game. They will point to the rafters, tell you the history of the program, because they all know it. This is a privilege to play basketball at the Phog. Your concerns are Jayhawks concerns. The people care about you, they want to know that you are ok.

The longer you are not wearing that uniform on game day, the less important you may come to some. However, many will imagine what this team can be with you in the lineup, rather than without. The longer you go without playing, the more people will feel like you disrespected this school, its fans, your beloved coach and your teammates.

These words may not be fair, but think about the little corner of every Jayhawks fans’ heart that bleeds crimson and blue. Any loss the Jayhawks may suffer in your temporary absence will be directed at you, a kid who has all the talent in the world but can not bring himself to the basketball court.

Phoggy lenses

The truth be told, many like myself have been looking forward to seeing you dominate in a Kansas uniform. Imagine Andrew Wiggins always in trouble at school, not being able to play. That season would have been much tougher than it was had the Jayhawks had to overcome his absence.

It isn’t fair for me to judge Mr. Preston, it is fair to write what i see going on in front of me. The possibility to squander such a good thing should scare any young man, and it’s a real possibility. Kansas has seven scholarship players, nine players total suiting up for games right now. That’s the equivalent of zero depth.

Sam Cunliffe will add depth after the fall semester, but Preston will be needed greatly. It’s a long season and the Jayhawks have a tough road ahead, but without Mr. Preston the Kansas Jayhawks are cruising. It will be interesting to see what happens with Preston, as many hope we all just forget about this. His play, given the chance, could be an amazing  addition to an already talented young squad.

I’m a fan, that’s why I care enough to write about this subject. I’m not only a fan of the Kansas Jayhawks and what Bill Self has accomplished, I’m a fan of Billy Preston. I know I’m a fan because I watched hours of hype video of him, and the music they put on those things hurt my insides.
