The sixth ranked Wichita State Shockers moved past Kentucky in the polls & sent College of Charleston back to the drawing board with a quality win against one of America’s best mid-major programs.

College of Charleston came into Charles Koch arena Monday night thinking they would compete against the Wichita State Shockers, and maybe even steal a win from the fortress that the Shox call home. That was not to be, as the Shockers recorded another double figure win that was never as close as the score would indicate.

Gregg Marshall coached in his 353rd game as the Shocker Head Coach in front of 10,506 Shocker Faithful, tying the school record that Hall of Famer Ralph Miller set way back in 1964. Gregg Marshall is now not only the winningest coach in school history, he’s also the most tenured.

Marshall is a huge part of this Shocker program and it’s because of him why they made headlines in the Missouri Valley Conference every year. Marshall also helped get this team to the American Athletic Conference, which will help the Shockers become even more respected in the world of college basketball.

Landry Shamet also made school history, tying the mark that Ron Baker set for threes made in consecutive games. With the mark set at 27, Shamet will have the chance to own the record for himself when the Shox head to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational next week.

The Shox passed their first true test at home this year.

Shaq Morris is becoming a force to be reckoned with, recording his first Double-Double of the season and his fourth overall, scoring 18 points & pulling ten boards. The 6’8″, 265 pound big man is becoming a threat from outside, going 2-4 from behind the arch and 4-6 on the year.

Samajae Haynes-Jones had another solid performance coming off the bench, adding another 7 assists to just one turnover. Shocker big men Rauno Nurger & Darral Willis Jr. helped dominate the paint, combining with Shaq to score 48 of the Shockers’ 81 points.

Willis & Nurger both added a three of their own to prove that the Shockers’ inside-out game is to be respected and opponents will not be able to leave the Shocker bigs alone outside the three-point stripe.

College of Charleston was outmatched early. The Cougars gave the Shox a run for their money in the second half, outscoring the Shox 41-34, but it was too late as Wichita State built a 25 point lead at half time.

Grant Riller & Joe Chealey accounted for most of the Cougar offense, as they combined for 37 of the 63 points scored by the Cougars. Charleston is ranked as the #4 mid-major according to College Insider, and are picked by many to win the Colonial Athletic Association this year.

The Shox passed their first true test at home this year, but Maui will be another story, playing against much tougher opponents on a neutral floor. The Shox will face CAL in the first round of the Maui Invitational on Monday, November 20th at 4:00 Central. The Shox will then face Marquette or VCU based on the results of the first round match-ups.

The Maui Invitational should prove to be a great testing ground for the Shox. How will the Shox measure up in Maui? The last time the Shox won the Maui Invitational, they went on all the way to the Final Four!

It will be exciting to see how it all plays out, and you can count on a follow-up after each game right here at KC KINGDOM!!!
