The Kansas City Royals might be watching the postseason from home, but what this team accomplished in 2014 and 2015 is remarkable. No team will ever be quite like them.

All season long, I saw a lot of comparisons between the 2014 and 2015 Kansas City Royals and the 2016 and 2017 Cleveland Indians. It was easy to compare the two honestly.

The Royals went to the World Series in 2014 and lost Game 7 in heartbreaking fashion. The Indians went to the World Series in 2016 and lost an unforgettable Game 7 to the Cubs. That’s why when 2017 rolled around, a lot of people thought that the Tribe could be motivated to win it all like the Royals were in 2015.

The big difference here is that the Kansas City Royals actually did go on to win the World Series in 2015 while the Indians lost in Game 5 of the 2017 ALDS to the New York Yankees. Not only did the Indians lose that series, they blew a 2-0 series lead. Sounds familiar to their 3-1 World Series lead that they also blew.

It’s hard to make it to the World Series in back to back years and the 2014 and 2015 Royals did just that.

Watching Cleveland lose in Game 5 just further proves that no team will ever quite be like those 2014/2015 Kansas City Royals squads. Sure, it’s easy for Royals fans to say that since we’re just a tad bit biased, but think about it… What those teams did was incredible.

In 2014, no one had any faith in the Kansas City Royals making the World Series and they did just that. They really should have won it too.

When 2015 rolled around, we all were thinking playoffs and the Royals steamrolled their way there. Two years ago, they were five outs away from being eliminated in the ALDS by the Houston Astros, but battled back and forced a Game 5. They then won that Game 5 by a score of 7-2.

In the ALCS, despite an epic rain delay, the Royals won their second straight pennant. In that year’s World Series, the right result happened and it happened with comeback after comeback.

Sometimes with sports, it’s just your year, or at least it feels like that. In 2015, it felt like the Royals’ year all season long and it ended up being their year, which was showcased by their World Series win.

In 2017, it sure felt like the Indians’ year. They had that amazing 22-game winning streak (that the Royals snapped), but when push came to shove, the favorite doesn’t always win it.

It’s hard to make it to the World Series in back to back years and the 2014 and 2015 Royals did just that. That’s what makes saying good-bye to this current era of Royals baseball even harder… We’ll probably never see a team like those two ever again in our lifetimes, even if we do win another World Series.

Baseball, man… It’s a great sport.
