The Kansas City Chiefs are 5-0 and now have two more wins than the second place team in the AFC West.
Heading into 2017, the AFC West was thought to be the best division in football. Two teams in the division went 12-4 last year and another went 9-7 and barely missed out on the playoffs.
Five weeks in, however, and two teams stand out in the AFC West. The obvious one is the Kansas City Chiefs, who are 5-0 on the year. Anyone who questions the Chiefs’ abilities clearly haven’t been watching them play this season.
The other team at the top of the West is the Denver Broncos, who are 3-1 and are coming off a bye week. Now I’ll be honest here… I never took the Broncos seriously before this season. Any team that thinks Trevor Siemian is the answer at quarterback doesn’t exactly scare me, but Denver’s defense is still Super Bowl caliber.
The Chiefs and Broncos will face off for the first time this season on October 30th at Arrowhead for Monday Night Football. Assuming both teams keep winning, that game could be an early decider as to who will win the AFC West.

As for the other two AFC West teams, the Oakland Raiders have completely fallen apart at the seams and the Los Angeles Chargers finally got in the win column last week. Ever since Marshawn Lynch danced on the sidelines in week two against the Jets, the Raiders have gone 0-3 and the Jets have gone 3-0. That’s some sort of beautiful karma.
Back to the real contenders of the division though. I saw some buzz on Twitter about how people (mainly Broncos fans) think that the Chiefs are overrated. I don’t understand how they can feel that way. Four out of the five teams they’ve defeated are potential playoff teams.
Meanwhile, Denver beat the Chargers, the Cowboys (who aren’t as good as they were last year), and the struggling Raiders. They also lost to the Bills. But sure, the Chiefs are overrated.
We’re only five weeks in and it’s a long season, but the Kansas City Chiefs have looked really good. They’ll face a tough slate of games these next few weeks, which will really indicate if they’re the real deal or not. The Broncos will host the winless Giants and then travel to Los Angeles before facing the Chiefs on Monday Night Football.
What do you think, Chiefs Kingdom? Do you think the Kansas City Chiefs should be afraid of the Denver Broncos in the division?
