Kansas City Royals 2017: Saying Goodbye

Throughout Sunday’s game, there was one image on the screen that resonated with me perhaps more than any other. Not the group hug from the core four. Nor the tearjerking video shown after the game. It’s not even Hosmer’s incredible home run after that ovation.

Remaining with me most is a simple white sign, held aloft by an elderly couple adorned in blue.

"“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened!” – Seuss"

This Dr. Seuss quote certainly sums up how Royals fans should be feeling. The hallmark of this run should be not taking anything for granted. All of the late inning comebacks this team accomplished should teach us that.

The Royals will strive to re-sign some of these men, but the truth is the Kansas City Royals will never exist in the same manner as they did. And you know what, that’s ok.

New players will come into this organization. New heroes will emerge. Games will be won and lost. What we need to remember is that we all saw something special along the way.

I would wager that even when (yes, when) the Royals win another World Series, no team will ever captivate the imagination in the way this one did. When you go from awful to championship after a lengthy drought, that pretty much ensures that will be the case.

Until next season, Thank you Royals!
