Kansas City Chiefs: Marcus Peters vs Keenan Allen gets the spotlight
By Ben Almquist
There appears to be a rivalry brewing between Kansas City Chiefs corner Marcus Peters and Los Angeles Chargers receiver Keenan Allen. It will be on center stage in this week’s game.
When you’re talking about two teams in the same division, there is surely going to be some kind of a rivalry. While the Chargers aren’t necessarily considered a big rival for the Kansas City Chiefs, there does appear to be a player rivalry forming. Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters and Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen seem to be ready to butt heads.
For Kansas City fans, this shouldn’t be surprising. Marcus Peters has made it known that he refuses to back down from anybody in the NFL. He’s gone facemask-to-facemask with multiple receivers in his young career. That includes Keenan Allen.
However, Marcus Peters has never really given any mention of his on-field feuds. Peters appears to approach each match-up as a matter of business that begins and ends on the field. No matter what anyone else has said, Peters has taken the high road and remained quiet. Well, that changed this week.
Taking It Public
One thing that needs to be established is that Marcus Peters didn’t start this. The Kansas City Chiefs corner has, in fact, been very quiet about the whole thing until recently. No, this started last season with a thinly veiled tweet from Keenan Allen.
Marcus Peters responded to that by taking the high road. All Peters did was wish Keenan Allen a speedy recovery. Of course, what is the point of talking trash to a guy who wasn’t going to be on the field that week anyways?

This time around, Marcus Peters is taking a different approach. In an interview with Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star, Peters referred to Keenan Allen, and essentially every other receiver in the NFL, as his children. There was no direct smack talk to any one player, but rather a general contempt displayed for everyone he matches against.
Front And Center
This feud will be on the center stage in this week’s game. The Kansas City Chiefs will be putting Marcus Peters on an island against Keenan Allen for most of the game. However, that is only as long as the Chargers line Allen up against him. That will be one thing to check on.

The Chargers offense is heavily slanted towards the passing game, and Keenan Allen is the top target for Philip Rivers. That means there should be plenty of opportunities for Marcus Peters to show Allen who the “bum” is.
I don’t doubt that Keenan Allen will have his moments on Sunday, but I’m giving the edge here to Marcus Peters. The Chiefs corner is coming into his third season, and that’s usually when players make their biggest step forward. Peters has seen everything the NFL has to offer now, and should be more than prepared.
Don’t be surprised if the Chargers opt to put Keenan Allen on the other side of the field instead.
The Kansas City Chiefs have been getting a lot of attention recently. That includes from other players who know that this is a team you need to take seriously. Marcus Peters has emerged as an elite corner in the NFL, and that means he’s going to be challenged repeatedly. These are the games where he proves his talent.
