The KC Royals are going to have an eventful offseason, as a lot of key players are set to hit free agency this winter. Two of the biggest names are first baseman Eric Hosmer and third baseman Mike Moustakas.

The 2017 season is winding down for the Kansas City Royals and that means that we’re potentially seeing the last of these key players in Royals uniforms. In less than three weeks, the 2017 season will be over and guys like Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, and Lorenzo Cain could all be headed elsewhere for 2018 and beyond.

What I want to focus on in this article are the first two players listed above. While baseball is a business and most players will go wherever the highest offer comes from, sometimes it’s comforting to have a close friend playing with you in that city.

With both Hosmer and Moustakas set to be free agents this winter, is it possible that these two could wind up playing for the same team for the next five, six, seven, however many years? Of course it’s possible! Anything is possible!

[Hosmer and Moustakas] have the same agent (Scott Boras) and have always seemed to be good buddies during their tenure in Kansas City.

When looking at the market for both of these players, the teams that make sense for these two if they want to sign somewhere as a pair would be the Red Sox and the Yankees. The easiest reason why is that both of these organizations have the money to shell out on both guys, but both teams also have needs at first and third base.

Jon Heyman of FanRag recently did a write-up on his best guesses as to where the hottest free agents will go and he listed the Yankees as a guess for both Hosmer and Moustakas. While Heyman didn’t list Boston as a “best guess” for Moose, he did mention it could be an option depending on how they feel about Rafael Devers at third base moving forward.

Other options listed for Moustakas were the Angels and Giants, which wouldn’t be a shocking sign either considering Moose is from California. It’d make sense for him to want to move back home and be closer to his family. Heyman even included this gem in his write-up,

"“The Giants will be all over (Moustakas),” predicts one rival."

San Francisco is clearly going to be in on acquiring Mike Moustakas this winter, and they certainly have the resources to land him. I could definitely see Moose playing with the Giants in 2018 and beyond, as their best option at third base at the moment is Pablo Sandoval.

Hosmer’s third potential landing spot via Heyman (with the Red Sox and Yankees being the other two) was with the Kansas City Royals. It’s no secret that the Royals would love Hosmer to re-sign and be Forever Royal, but the chances of that happening seem slimmer and slimmer as the season winds down.

The KC Royals were not listed as a “best guess” for Mike Moustakas. Moose has looked pretty banged up this last half of the season and while he definitely can heal up this offseason, the Royals should go all in on Hosmer.

It could make sense for Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas to sign somewhere as a pair. They have the same agent (Scott Boras) and have always seemed to be good buddies during their tenure in Kansas City. It could make leaving the team that drafted them and heading somewhere else seem a little less scary.

What do you think, Royals fans? Could you see Hosmer and Moustakas going to the same team this offseason or will they go their separate ways like the rest of the team?
