The opening week of the 2017 NFL season was an eventful one for the KC Chiefs.

The KC Chiefs opened the season with a terrific road victory over the defending Super Bowl champions, the New England Patriots. The Chiefs used a strong showing to win 42-27 in front of a national audience.

Rookie running back Kareem Hunt was just one of several players that had a fantastic game. He recovered from a fumble on his first play from scrimmage to rush for 148 yards and catch five passes for 98 yards. He found the end zone three times.

Hunt’s performance earned him the coveted Sports Illustrated cover this week. He also set the record for the most total yards in an NFL debut with 246.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

More surprisingly, quarterback Alex Smith thoroughly out played the Greatest of All Time, Tom Brady. Smith went 28 for 35 for 368 yards and four touchdowns passes, which earned him NFL Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Tyreek Hill showed he was ready to be the primary receiver by catching seven balls for 133 yards and a touchdown.

The win was a bittersweet one, however. All-Pro safety Eric Berry tore his Achilles tendon and will miss the rest of the season.

Losing Berry will be a big blow for the Kansas City Chiefs, but if they can avoid any other major injuries, they are poised for a big season.

Maybe the Chiefs are just that good – KC Kingdom

"Kansas City soundly beat New England across the board. That doesn’t tend to happen unless one team is better than the other. Yes, I just said that. The Kansas City Chiefs may very well be a better team than the New England Patriots this year."

Eric Berry’s injury shouldn’t stifle the Chiefs – Arrowhead Addict

"Ron Parker has quietly been one of the most consistent players on the defensive side of the football for Kansas City, and he will be counted upon to pick up the slack in Berry’s stead. He has positional versatility and can play at either free or strong safety."

Eric Berry says he’s coming back to change the game – FanSided.com

"Coming back to change the game are exactly the words you want to hear from Berry. At 28 years-old, it doesn’t seem like a retirement is even a consideration. Berry wants to come back even better than ever in 2018."

Alex Smith not sure of his future with the Chiefs – CBS Sports

"…Smith threw for 368 yards and four touchdowns, a performance that was good enough to be named AFC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday. The funny thing about Smith’s award is that if he were to win it again in Week 1 next season, he may be doing it for a different team."

The Kansas City Chiefs hope to look as good this week against the Philadelphia Eagles as they did against the Patriots. Hopefully, they won’t lose another key player this week.
