The KC Chiefs made a big decision when they traded up to the tenth overall pick to select Patrick Mahomes. That’s why it’s been so refreshing to see him perform well in the first two preseason games.

The biggest storyline this preseason throughout the NFL is going to be the play of the rookie quarterbacks. For the first time since 1983, the Kansas City Chiefs have a rookie quarterback who was drafted in the first round and it’s been fun to actually see some hype surrounding one of our players for once.

Patrick Mahomes has looked good for the KC Chiefs so far in two preseason appearances. He’s completed 17 of 23 passes for 135 yards and three touchdowns during his limited action, but when he’s thrown the football, he’s looked good.

These four quarterbacks are going to be compared to each other for their entire careers.

The other three big rookie quarterbacks to watch this season are Mitchell Trubisky, Deshaun Watson, and DeShone Kizer. Trubisky was the second overall pick for the Chicago Bears, Watson went 12th overall to the Houston Texans, and Kizer was a second round pick by the Cleveland Browns.

Kizer has yet to appear in his second preseason game, but the Notre Dame quarterback looked really good in his lone appearance. He threw for 184 yards on 11 passes with a touchdown for the Browns and very well could end up as the starter for the Browns (though they usually have five different starters a year anyway).

More from KC Kingdom

Trubisky shone in his first game, going 18 of 25 for 166 yards and a touchdown. He saw less action in game two, only throwing eight total passes and completing six of them for 60 yards and a score. If the Bears weren’t paying Mike Glennon so much money, Trubisky would be the easy answer to have start in the Windy City.

Lastly, the guy that Chiefs fans really wanted: Deshaun Watson. Watson only completed three passes in his second preseason game, but threw for 102 yards and rushed for a touchdown. His first preseason game saw him go 15 of 25 for 179 yards. If Watson ends up being better than Mahomes, it’ll sting in Kansas City for eternity.

The good news, however, is that Mahomes has looked the best so far out of the bunch. Sure it’s just preseason so we shouldn’t get super excited, but it’s hard not to. The Kansas City Chiefs haven’t had a first round rookie quarterback in 34 years, so I don’t care if it’s just preseason, I’m going to look forward to watching Mahomes play.

While the other three guys could end up starting for their teams, don’t feel like that’s a knock on Mahomes. If anything, it’s a huge compliment to the Chiefs because they have a reliable starter and can contend for a playoff spot. The other three teams don’t necessarily have that.

At the end of the day, we’re only two weeks into the preseason, but these four quarterbacks are going to be compared to each other for their entire careers. It doesn’t matter who is the best in the preseason, but it’s certainly reassuring to see Mahomes look as good as he has.

Fingers crossed that Mahomes goes on to be the best out of the four.
