The Kansas City Chiefs traded up to the tenth overall spot in the 2017 NFL Draft to draft Patrick Mahomes. Now, the former Texas Tech star will make his Chiefs preseason debut on Friday night. Is this the biggest preseason game ever?

A lot of football fans don’t care about the preseason and it’s understandable. The results don’t matter and there’s quite a few starters who don’t even take snaps until the third game. Why get super invested if it doesn’t count?

Well, for Kansas City Chiefs fans, Friday’s preseason opener against the San Francisco 49ers is much different from season’s past. This year, the Chiefs have a first round rookie quarterback who is going to be taking snaps and leading the offense. This is something that Chiefs fans haven’t witnessed since 1983.

In 2014, I attended a preseason game against the Bengals. When Aaron Murray took the field for his reps, fans in the stands were so freaking excited. Some even gave Murray a standing ovation. After all, Murray was the first quarterback that the Chiefs had drafted since 2011 when they nabbed Ricky Stanzi in the fifth round of that year’s draft.

After reading that last paragraph, why shouldn’t Chiefs fans be fired up for Patrick Mahomes? If fans were THAT excited for Aaron Murray, a fifth round pick in 2014, just imagine how crazy they’re going to be when Mahomes walks onto the field for the first time on Friday. It’s going to be loud, just the way it should be at Arrowhead Stadium.

The other “big time” rookie quarterbacks have already made their preseason debuts and all looked pretty good. DeShone Kizer looked phenomenal, going 11/18 with 184 yards and a touchdowns while both Mitchell Trubisky and Deshaun Watson impressed in their debuts as well. Trubisky went 18/25 for 166 yards and a touchdown while Watson completed 15 of his 25 pass attempts for 179 yards.

In other words, the pressure is on for Mahomes in his debut! No, the preseason stats really don’t mean anything, but you just know how the headlines are going to look if Mahomes goes out and throws an interception or looks bad all together. Chiefs fans and NFL analysts will be freaking out and that will get old real fast.

Mahomes is going to be compared to these three guys for his entire career, which is why the “stat watching” is already becoming a thing in Kansas City. Trubisky is someone that the Chiefs had no shot at landing in the draft, but is still someone to keep an eye on.

Each Chiefs quarterback is supposed to get a quarter of playing time this evening and Mahomes will get his turn in the third quarter. It’ll be the most exciting third quarter in Kansas City Chiefs preseason history.

If Mahomes does look sluggish, please keep in mind that this is an exhibition game. If he looks good, the same advice still applies. Just enjoy the moment of watching the Chiefs’ newly drafted quarterback take snaps in a football game, even if it is just preseason.
